equalizing subwoofers for ported response
 
hey guys, this is a more high end tuning question. I have an Alpine pxah700 processor, and while running some response curves on winisd, I noticed that by using the "eq/filter" tab that I could introduce a parametric boost to my sealed subwoofer set up that would mimic the response curve of the same drivers in a vented set up. Now, my question is: Can I expect similar response in real life with a similar boost at volumes well below max output? I'm thinking that I may do some experiments in the spring to compare sealed/eq'd systems to vented ones in real life set ups to get an idea of the limitations, and how well it works. Comments please...

^^to give you an idea of what I did:

used 2 eminence omega pro 15 subs in a sealed 4.0 cube box, vented 8.0 cube box tuned to 35 hz, and the eq'd sealed with a parametric boost at 34hz, 1.0 Q, and 7 dBs of boost. The final eq'd curve and vented curve are nearly identical.

note: these are not the subs I have, but they are listed in the winisd program for those that have it, to see for themselves.

you'll need a monster amp to avoid clipping it with those kinds of boosts.
something tells me even if response curves are identical, it will not sound exactly the same. :D.

well I am not sure winisd is a true predictive modeling and simulation tool in the way you are thinking of using it though in theory... probably a fun and smokey test is in your future. Is the model physics based?

well, the idea is to get the vented system's response out of sealed box volumes. Since max power and output is not the goal, but merely to accentuate the bottom 2 octaves smoothly. I theorized that if the response curve could be mimicked and volume was kept well below max (to leave plenty of dynamic headroom). Then I should get a fair re-creation of the vented system's response instead of wildly boosting frequencies. The amp's gains will be at minimum, the amp's power is rms x 1.5, and the volume control will be never above 2/3 of max.

... yeah it would HAVE to be low power then you can goose the low end (if that works at all with the sub in question in a sealed box) and cut the top end freq of the sealed box sub so it can mimic the performance of the same woofer...
if your assumption vented sounds better?? or are you chasing LF extension? The question that is being begged to be asked is "why would you want to?" To me it would be a fun experiment and then, if successful you can claim all woofers sound the same.

For the sake of debate, I wouldn't go quite that far.....:D

It's an interesting hypothesis that you can create the same response curve electrically as you can mechanically....if it works you could claim that any woofer can be made to sound the same in either box type. It would be handy to be able to do this if you don't have room for a larger enclosure.....since the amp would then be required to make up for the difference it better have some cahones......:worshippy :laugh:
