Finding Crossover / Tuning frequency

Is there a test CD or way to figure out if your crossover is tuned correctly to the sub and enclosure? I was thinking may be there is a test tone or something where you could sweep the crossover to find the sweet spot. I know you can calculate the frequency of the box and sub but the crossover is slightly vague as to what frequency it is crossing at.

Are you talking about resonant frequency?

You put an RTA in your car and run a sweep and the RTA will peak at the resonant freq.

Then if you're building a ported box...you build it to that frequency...or a bit below.

Ummmm I dont think I would port to the resonant note in a SQ system, things could get a little boomy ... You want to port and build your subwoofer box for the smoothest response to overcome the cars resonance.

But the RTA part is good, use the RTA on pink noise and it will tell you about your crossover points, your frequency extension and your ability to control your system sonically. The sub to midbass crossover is always a bug-a-boo with either a suckout or overlap and the RTA will help you minimize the crossover affects if you have enough control (EQ) over your system.

Remember when using an RTA it is a great tool for improving the performance of my SQ system but not something I would use to tune my car.

Yea I guess this is SQ forum eh?

Either way, I agree, use your ears to tune, not a machine.....on the other hand it'll get you some extra points in competition to have a flat RTA reading.

I agree with both Brandon and Johny. I use the RTA when a major component is changed. To get a snap shot of what it looks like in pink noise. The final tuning ( that never truly ends ) is with the ears.
