Full range vs. Mid range driver
 

Would it be better to get a good full range driver and band pass it for midrange duty or a dedicated midrange driver. My thinking is that the full range would have a wider freq response and be more flexible with cross points. Opinions??

the usable frequency response of the speaker would be very important in making that decision.....by usable i mean is a full range speaker that has some frequency response anomalies the would render it a pile of crap....although still considered full range

It's a great idea. Like you said it gives you lots of freedom for crossover adjustment. You might consider these. Beware though, they have paper cones so they can never come into contact with water. They have become popular with the home speaker DIY crowd.

Thanks for the suggestion, those are very nice, but a little big for my needs. I've found a great deal on cdt es-03 3" mids, that i'm considering or morel cdm 54/88. I
think these are in the power and freq range that i can use them with great flexibility....prices aren't bad either..especially for the cdt.

A 3" driver for mid-range duty. Humph. I would have thought that a speaker with a relatively small surface area would not be ideal for that application. Just out of curiosity, what frequencies do you think you'll send to these speakers?
What frequencies do most consider to be mid-range?
How many different areas is the 20-20000Hz range broken into? Bass, mid-bass, mid-high, and highs?
I'm only partially retarded. But I've never seen at what frequency you're into a different group.

A good 3 can usually go down to low 200's with a decent 24db slope.
Something like the aura 3, the dayton 3 and one of the peerless models.

Not exactly full range and they won't usually play as well as a tweet to 20khz. However one can work with a pretty cheep tweet and get good results. I can't say how the CDT ES one will do, may as well just get the 3 from vifa for cheeper since that's what CDT speakers are.

there can be as many as you want theoretically, but the most i've seen with good results was five divisions; sub bass, bass, mid bass, mid, tweet. That guy had them crossed; 20-50 subs, 50-120 bass, 120-200 mid bass, 200-5k mids, 5k-20k tweets. He had 4 speakers up front on each side; 9' bass, 6" mid bass, 3" dome mid, 1" tweet. Subs were in the trunk. The system was very clean and dynamic, with little to no overhang or sloppiness in the bass-mid bass region, and very clear vocals and horns. I'm looking to re-create similar tonality and clarity in the vocal and mid area as i listen to a lot of jazz (horns and vocals). In my case the set up will be a 4 way, with a 6" in the upper door area, 3" and 1" mid and tweet in the sail panel area optimized for the driver using t/a and angling. This will be in a large/wide car ( cadillac dts).

my old HAT Legatias played 140 at 24 DB all day long.. and I listen to my stuff pretty loud. But I only played up to 8k..

The L3 IMHO works well between 250Hz and about 7Khz. But the L4 really is a full range (close to anyway) speaker. I had mine installed without any crossover and they easily extended up to 15K with out any real harshness. And they had more bottem end then I've ever heard from a 4" mid. If you looking for a "full range" speaker, take a serious look at the L4.

That's just me though.

I like that mid too, probably pricey though.
