Yea, here we go again with the horn thing.

I've been considering looking into running horns in my van,I think it happened after my buddy almost put his foot through my mid.

My problem is,and I'll take some pics when I get a chance, is that the bottom of my dash is quite low.....lower than most cars I've seen. I'm wondering how much this is going to affect my soundstage......I can run some tweets crossed over high but will that REALLY do much?

Westec 11-29-2004 07:48 AM

I have some pics of some heavy duty grilles that you can stand on that look awesome if you like. With horns, the biggest issue is having a 30 band eq to tune them.....

Brandon 11-29-2004 03:33 PM

Well, that wouldn't be too much of a problem if my Behringer was going in the van, it's not, but I was thinking of maybe picking up an old PPI DEQ230 or something along those lines because I gotta have something and it's just too much work to build a rack to mount the behringer.

But the main thing with the horn idea, is leg/foot space.....would mini horns have the same effect as full bodies? Keep in mind, I am limited to the width of the horn, but I have acres of depth, so I can make the lense MUCH longer if need be.

Paul Niwranski 11-29-2004 05:37 PM

You have 'acres' of depth along the kickpanel? What Caravan do you own??

The only KPs fitting into any minivan I've been in of late are ID minihorns and IMO they don't play low enuf to use.

Huh?? They play lower than any conventional tweet...

Paul Niwranski 11-30-2004 02:31 PM

^ but the whole point is that they are supposed to cover the midrange too....

Brandon 11-30-2004 05:56 PM

From the front of the dash to the fire wall....there is lots of space if I need to make the lenses of the horns longer.

Kris Dancey 11-30-2004 08:39 PM

No car horn is going to completely cover the midrange though...The mini's play down to about 1KHz. while most of the others will play down around 800Hz. Is 200Hz. that big a deal? Im not Pro Image Dynamics or anything, but the mini's do serve a useful purpose.

Brandon-there is a lot more to horn design than simply extending the lense, why not buy a full size horn in the first place??

Paul Niwranski 12-01-2004 01:51 PM

IMO the lense on the Mini's is not large enuf to extend down to 1kHz. I think they rely on the dash extending their opening. A lot. That's neither here nor there though as it's not like I'm looking at buying a set

As for room under the dash - my Caravan has room for maybe a 4" in the KP before it hits the wheelwell.... Tons of room if you put the motors in the middle but I wouldn't want to hear that.

Brandon 12-01-2004 01:54 PM

Well, I thought about it....I might have room for the CD-2s massive motor structure under the dash but I THINK....don't quote me yet, but I think a full body horn is too wide at the end of the lense. I mean thick as in the space between the floor and the bottom of the lense.

I'd have to check, but I think the CD1/CD2's are over 2" thick which may get in my way (6 feet tall and size 11 boots).

Is there a horn, say USD maybe, that plays a bit lower or can I use a small(4") dome mid to help out the horn. How long would the body of the horn need to be to play all midrange frequncies, or would it be pointless?

Also, if I had to install a 4" mid, how is that going to affect my soundstage/tonality in conjuction with the horn?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm still pretty new to the horn subject.

Kris Dancey 12-01-2004 10:21 PM

Dukk-I definitely agree with you there, the dash does help the mini significantly, but on the plus side you dont get the tonal irregularities that you normaly have with a larger horn.

Brandon-No car audio horn is going to play all the midrange frequencies, it would be massive.

And you'll have a hell of a time mating a 4" dome or midrange to a horns efficiency, don't bother.

I think you would be much better off with a conventional tweet/midrange.

not to be rude, but how much money have you spent or are planning to spend on this 94 minivan? Is this a family van? I mean you can't impress the chicks with a minivan man. If it's a dual purpose(family transport and car stereo project) van then that's cool, you always got to take care of the mama and your babies man. But, if this is your single guy ride, then my suggestion is to save some of the money and get a hot ride. Chicks dig hot rides. The tunes are secondary, hot ride then hot tunes= hot chicks ridin' the snake!Minivan with lots a gear= lonely dude crusin' the streets! With that said...to each his own. As long as you're happy have fun.

How much more work is it to install your Behringer than to go out and spend money on an eq and install that.

Brandon 12-04-2004 01:27 PM

Well it's quite a bit of work actually, because I gotta build a rack for it, because I'm not going to let it roll around in the back or the front somewhere.

Then the rack has to be made to look good with the rest of the install, because if it aint going to look good or be hidden it sure as hell isn't worth my time.

At least with a PPI DEQ it's a matter of hiding it behind one of my fender panels and run the display wire up to the front. Yea, it doesn't make a lot of sense because I already have the Behringer, but it's just a lot of work that I'm not willing to put time into just yet.

Well listen DUDE, I honestly could care less about what anybody thinks about what I drive.

I drive it because it's good on gas and it was cheap.

Not to mention, I've seen more than a few minivan's that look 100 times better than most of these punk kids and thier Honda's. I've seen MANY vans that I would be proud to drive.

Plus, I'm not sure but I don't think anybody, except maybe you by the sounds of it, does up thier vehicle to impress anyone. We do it because WE like it....who give a **** what other people think. If you don't like it, then you give me the money and I'll make it look the way you want it to look.

And if I want an award winning system in my van then so-be-it.
Why don't you go tell Mark Eldridge that his 4Runner isn't a hot enough vehicle to pick up chicks in

MIKEONE 12-04-2004 02:48 PM

big sexy.......you have been buuuuuurned

islandphile 12-04-2004 04:02 PM

Hey Brandon you don't have to agree... but I like Big Sexy's take...funny stuff!

Brandon quit being so uptight...the guys having a bit 'o fun that's all...you sound like you are in dire need of a BJ...way too much tension Brandon...relax

Brandon 12-04-2004 08:33 PM

I dunno man, every post I've read of his is about impressing chicks.

I don't worry about impressing "chicks" anymore, there women now, they were chicks in highschool but I grew up.

I know what he's saying but this isn't the donut shop, this is the SQ forum.

I especially don't appreciate talking down about my, or anyone elses for that matter, vehicle.

I don't drive a Lexus or BMW, so now the "chicks" won't like me? Meh, bummer for me I guess.

Anyway, sorry to sound like a dick, but lets stay on topic shall we?

Big Sexy 12-09-2004 08:50 PM

Aw..take it easy dude. I didn't mean to dump on your ride. You happy with it...keep on truckin'. Who gives a crap what some big a**, dumb, old fool says anyway. I'm no expert in this junk, and I don't know you from Adam, so I don't know what your priorities are man. I'm just havin' some fun and lookin' for trouble. Seriously guy, If I have offended...accept my appologies. Boys remember, the auditory canal closes up if you don't get sex regularly.Later......

Brandon 12-10-2004 01:11 PM

holy, haven't seen this topic in a while.

Big sexy, I was likely having a rough day when I wrote that, one of many lately, so I appologize for being an ass...I don't TRY to get under anyone's skin unless it's Richard and he's not around much anymore.

So, sorry man, hope I didn't offend you.

Big Sexy 12-10-2004 08:24 PM

Much love Brandon. You awright in Big Sexy's book. takes a man to stand up for what he believes. Big respect!

DragonBoy 12-14-2004 03:20 AM

Hey big sexy what 15 inch cerwin vega subs do you have? and what amp you using on them?? just interested as i had 2 strokers in my old setup on 1 2000x

Big Sexy 12-14-2004 07:16 PM

^I got a couple of v-max 15s powered by a pioneer gm-d510m. It ain't gonna win any spl comps or anything, but it's much loud and very clean. By the way this pioneer amp is a steal at 350.00 and 500rms. I got the subs in a vented box that's large(5 cubes)and it gets deep and powerful. Price ain't bad either.
