jl 8w7 vs. focal 21wx (8'' SQ subwoofers)
 

Hi all. Great forum. I am new here.
Just need your exprience in choosing between two great SQ subwoofers, the jl 8w7 and focal beryllium 21wx. The rest of the system is Clarion HX-D1 headunit, Polk Audio sr5250 components and Audison vrx4.300 amplifier. My aim is a SQ system-minimal and accurate. SPL is not a priority, but not undesirable.

For SQ - Focal. For SPL JL, but there won't be much SPL out of 8".

Wow. 8w7 vs. 21Wx..... Definately can't compare the two. I've done a couple systems with the 8W7's and they sound okay, still a little muddy for an 8" and the recommended enclosure size is still a bit big.


If you're into SQ definately suggest the Utopia. Even the 27KX sounds very good and accurate.

Thanks for the feedback guys. What other suggestions would you have for a pair of 8'' sq subs? Image dynamics, Boston pro etc. 21wx very expensive! Just looking for something musical, small sealed enclosure, decent extension and loudness.

this i knew but had not looked into how expensive!

Comparing Focal Be stuff to JL is like comparing a diamond to a pile of . And if you think that woofer's expensive, check out the three way passive component setup :smokin:

If you're looking SQ and still have an eye on the Focal, check out the 21V1 in the polyglass line. Still a great sounding sub, tighter than the JL by far.

I suggest the DD 1508 for spl as well as SQ


we do them all the time down firring in custom center consols in trucks, they sound very nice, but they do want power!

Focal and run it in a ported enclosure and you got a great match for an amazing system
I've worked with Cman for a while and both of us agree by experience

If you want to keep the price lower check out the Focal 21V2 8" subs - still a great sounding woofer... and just a bit cheaper than the $1500 Utopia's - coming in at $379 each :)

I think someone above quoted a 21V1 above, think they ment the 21V2 so hence my post to clarify

I may try to get a pair of 21wx's on ebay an use sealed enclosures. How would that compare to a single one running ported? Would a single one running sealed not give me enough bottom end?

But yeah, if you want amazing SQ then the WX is the way to go, but again the price tag is hefty.

There's other brands that I've tried that are quite good also.

Hertz, Dyn Audio, Morel.

More cost effective and acceptable SQ brands to consider Image Dynamics, CDT, Diamond.


I'm sure there's plenty others, but these are just ones I've had experience with.

i actually have my utopia be no.7 set matched to 2 8W7's. the 8"s are quite tight if i do say so myself. however i am curious about trying some 21WX's myself. would be nice to fun all focal speakers.......i have the 13WS's too but i haven't finished my kick panels to hear what they sound like yet.... :(
