Kicker KX3
 

Anyone have any experience with the KX3 3 way active crossover? It's the only 3 way crossover available to me through any of our suppliers. I'm looking to use it to run mid bass' in the doors and then components bi-amped.

If you have a separate sub out and the Low pass is stereo and goes high enough to be used for the midbass then it's all you need. Otherwise, consider adding a 2way crossover after either the mid or high output to further split that band up.

It blows that there are not more decent 4way crossovers on the market :thumbsdow

hmmmmm, that almost works. Problem is for my tweets I plan on using the 4chn amp (external) that came with the older alpine single din flip out screens (still just 50wX4 max). Use just 2 of the channels, but problem is that there is no crossover built into the amp so I would have no control over the crossover point for the tweets without a seperate active crossover. I figured a 3 way or a 2 way dedicated for just the mids and tweets (or midbass, mids, tweets) would be cheeper than buying a small 4chn amp with build in crossover.

Also, If I did components off fronts and midbass of sub out, then time align would be inneffective for the midbass. A huge part (not all, but significant) of getting good response in that range is being able to delay the left channel.

If your deck has a separate sub out then you could use that for the subs. This would free up the LOW (or SUB) out on the outboard crossover to use for the midbass provided it is a stereo output. High pass for these would have to come from the deck or amp. Then the MIDS could use the bandpassed MID out and the Tweets the HIGH out.

I would avoid using deck power.

Where is the TA coming from? The deck?

haha, sorry, thought you were trying to find a way to not use the 3way.

That's pretty much exactly what I planned on doing. High pass from the amp for midbass, and the sub out on the crossover is stereo. There's also a frequency multiplier for the high so you can use it to tweek the tweets.

The only part I plan on using deck power (via an external amp 22wrms I think) is just for the tweets. This should be plenty not?

But Dukk, have you had the chance to use this particular crossover? I'd like to hear comments before I commit and order it.

For TA, I'll be using a pioneer AVICF90BT (D-Din) with the external processor (DEQ-P8000). I'd like to go with alpine, but I can get the AVIC for free from pioneer with some prizes I've saved up from our training. I hope the DEQ-P8000 is a good unit.

bah - I just went and had a look at the specs. It's not a '3way' crossover (although they state it is) but more of a 'dual 2way' in that it has one low pass and two high pass - a design popularized by the Coustic XM3. There is no bandpass channel that has both low and high pass filters on it.

IMO you are better off sourcing a Coustic XM5 or XM6 or a Pioneer 635 crossover. All those are readily available for cheap on ebay and all work well. The Coustic are my favourites as they have individual inputs for all channels so you can run one, two, or three sets of inputs as you need.

Well.... I'll have to see if the rep can still get me the 635, if not, I'll have to go with the coustic piece (the XM6 is $50 on ebay right now). This is going to be my personal car as well as a bit of a demo car, and I don't want to use products that we don't carry if I can get away with it.

I understand that completely. You could daisy chain two of the KX3 crossovers together and wind up with a bandpass channel as long as the lowpass crossover goes high enuf for a midbass.

I had the KX2, didn't like it. It was just 2 separate LPF/ HPF, not a real crossover.
I use the PG 2 way, but looked up the 3 way.
PG TX406 might be what you need.
