Looking for advice on upgrading subs
Looking for advice on upgrading subs
I've been reading ALOT in these forums and man, there are some very talented people here with alot of experience. I'm hoping to tap into that if you can help. Heres the details;
The Ride: Ford F350 Crew Cab (Diesel = 2x 850cca batteries
)
Cab volume is 135ft3
Current setup is 2 10" Kenwood subs in a sealed 1.3 box behind the rear seat(which I had to relocate to make fit). Sounds better than you would expect! but I want to but the seat back & need a little more thump.
Current setup:
Alpine W205 into a kenwood 4ch amp driving Infinity components in the front doors & Coaxial Infinities in the rear doors (ya I know, there goes the sound stage but I want to do 5.1 at some point with maybe an option to turn off the rears when listening to music)
Sub amp is an Infinity 611a, specs are:
456w rms X 1 @ 4 ohms
657w rms X 1 @ 2 ohms
17-302 Hz
New setup: I will be replacing the centre front seat with a full fibreglass console from the dash back to the rear of the front seats. I want the sub box to fit inside the console but not be attached to the console, effectively the console will slide overtop of the box. That way the box can be all 3/4" MDF and replaced if i don't like it, without f'ing the whole console. This will put the sub basically dead centre in the cab and at floor level.
I have not laid out the console yet but I believe the max. area for the box to fit will be 15" wide between the seats, 14" high to keep it under storage compartment/armrest and 18" long going forward before I want the console to drop down lower to the floor. So 14x15x18 could be a bit flexible if necessary.
Here's what I THINK I want:
1 12" IXL-12.2.2. downfiring in a sealed box. My 2 other thoughts were an Alpine Type X or JL 12w7 but I don't really want to spend the $$ on the JL, so I would likely would buy used.
What's coming out of it? Everything-Classic Rock, Hip Hop, some top 40, even a little Jazz, not much screamo.
So after all this, (sorry for long post but facts help), let me have it; what am I f'ing up, what makes sense? I want SQ but love to here it bump, especially on hip-hop. Will not be competing, and this is a daily driver year round. THANKS IN ADVANCE

Thanks for thr recommendation, the 12" IXL-12.2.2. is $192 shipped. Is the 12" RD audio Sonance at a similar price point? I'm sure it's hard for you to be unbiased (you sell the RD) but if you asked 10 people to listen to a both subs, how many do you believe would say the RD outperformed the IXL? With my planned install, will it sound better down firing or firing out the back of the console. I like the idea of showing it off pointed rearward instead of hiding it pointed down, but I have had 2 people tell me to point it down for much better sound. Thanks.
Is anyone able to offer advice on an IXL-12.2.2. vs. an Alpine Type X vs. an
RD Sonance?? Again I will be able to come up with about 15"x14"x18" (about 1.5ft3 I think). I really need to get it ordered but want to be sure I'm making a wise choice. If I posted in the wrong forum, sorry, mods, feel free to move it to the right forum. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not getting any other suggestions on my install here so I guess I'll just go with my plans and see how it works out
. I'll go with your advice and use a RD Sonance 12" Sub instead of the IXL. What are your thoughts on having it down firing in the console versus firing out the rear of the console towards the back seat? Thanks!

If I was firing to the rear I would consider a single 10" in a ported box instead with the port firing to the rear as well.......protecting the driver with some kind of grill would be necessary but the output could be stronger.......

Which model KWs are you using now?? 420guy had 2 of the "Tornados" in 2cuft sealed in a Cavi and the output off 380W was pretty impressive.......maybe yours just need a little bit more room to work with.....
Thanks for the help. I am currently running 2x 10" Kenwood KCF-W2510's (I think they called then Typhoon, the cone is all swirled like a tornado) in a sealed 1.3ft box behind the seat firing into the back of the seat. For a couple of <$100 subs, they sound pretty good, but I would like just a little more but more importantly I want to get them out from behind the seat and into a console. I may be wrong but my thoughts were a single 12" would be better suited for the new space that I will have to work with (14x15x18 max) The face of the box where the sub would be cut in would be 15x18 (assuming down firing) so I believe that would limit me to 1-12".Rear firing would have a face area of 14x15. I've got to say, those old Kenwoods did cause the Futureshop install guy's head to spin around and try to see what was in the box when he sat in the drivers seat and cranked it up. His first question was " what did you say those subs are?) I'm sure he's heard alot better, he just wasn't expecting that much out of 2 10" Kenwoods I guess. Thanks again for some guidance, I'm still pretty green at this stuff.
Well, I just ordered the 12" Sonance from Smartass so I guess when it gets here, I can try to figure out how to make it sound good in my truck. Once I start the console, I can figure out the exact size of the box and get it started.
