MTX tweeters harsh in A pillars
 

I've been piecing together sound in my 07 Silverado ext cab nnbs, non bose, and the first thing I did was to swap out the factory 6.5 in the fr doors and the tweeters in the a pillars. So, I got a deal on a set of mtx tx 6001 components and they sounded pretty good until I added the Pioneer avh 3300 in which case the midbass became awsome but the tweeters became over the top. A pro installer put them in and he used the -3 db connections, and even still I had to attenuate in the eq upper bands alot. Sometimes I get harsh, shrill treble, not pleasant. I wonder if the windshield is part of the problem, Ive allways liked coax speakers for the tweeters in the doors and am considering moving them off the pillars and down. Thats where I need advice, anyone familiar with these truck/ tweeter combos, and if door/kick panel, or different tweeters would mellow things out.

Just as I thought, this is the first I've heard of 'upstage tweeters' and the only ones that should be installed in the pillars to, i assume, raise the staging. This is fun. I'm a total amateur, and I've learned more, quickly, here than any other site. I am super happy with the 5 in Tang Band sub I have installed in my center console, albeit with the addition of an amp to drive it. Its very cool to take the math,apply it to the box, venting properly and getting better bass than you would think possible. Thanks for the link, nice gear, hmmmm

Install them under the carpet, it should mellow them out.

Hey thanx another good tip, right now I have them stuffed full of kleenex and the eq at 2.5k set -8db, somewhat better, just ordered a set of vibe components, cheap like me, more trials, will probably eventually end up with a full set of quality gear after this stuff coughs their cookies. I have a Kole audio 4 ch amp that sounds great but the switches feel like crap and may end up at the recyclers sooner than later.
Would you rec berber carpet or maybe a cut pile?

The 07 Silverado A-pillar tweeter placement bounces the sound from the tweeters off the windshield (bouncing off the windshield can lead to harshness). Since those are soft dome tweeters, try the angled mounts that the set came with to get the tweeters to be more on axis to avoid reflections off of the glass.... or build pods...

Start by aiming them just in front of your nose from the a-pillar position, then make small adjustments from there for the best sound.

Those tweeters should sound fine once aimed properly.

Hey thanks kaos I havn't talked to the tech who installed them originally to see if he has the pods as he simply replaced the stock ones, not without some mods to them tho, so I may have to mold pods into the pillars, I will probably mount the new tweeters in the doors and filter the mtx around 6 k I'm thinking and run them off the hu front amps. I suspected the windshield was the culprit tho and I will probably disconnect them till I see what the silk tweeters sound like on pods in the doors. I'm also going to sound deaden the doors while in there. This is now a quest!

Well, an update, I gave up on the MTX and the A pillars, I just installed a set of Vibe Audio Black Air 6.5 comps, open box, $61, much better quality than the |MTX 6001s ,added sound dampener behind woofers, and flush mounted the 20 mm silk tweeters in the front top corner of the door, man, sound nervana, really nice and eq is now nearly flat. I like the tweeters closer to the mids so this is a good compromise in this vehicle. The little $40 Tang Band 5.25 sub is just what I wanted, nice tight deep bass and plenty loud, powered by one rear channel of a $79 kole audio 4 ch amp 85 watts rms/ch , with the front channels on the Vibes, really satisfied, I think I've achieved my goal of clean, not dangerously loud sound for not much scratch. I;m really amazed with the Vibe comps as these are the second from the bottom in the line. They can also be assemble as a coax set if needed, very honest sound.

Placing a cheap tweeter in the sail might be a bad idea. I've used a infinity reference tweeter in the sail and it sounded horrible, I've used a Morel tweeter in the sail and it sounded really good...

I actually installed them in the top of the door panel which angles back slightly, not in the sail, and aside from being farther away from the mid than recommended they sound really brilliant, I'm not wanting better, its been a month and still happy, I'm sold on the quality of design build and sound of the black air series. Am having to search out better source material, as these speakers really expose poorly ripped mp3s or other recording flaws.
