Need some DSP ideas
 

OK, so I picked up a Pioneer DEQ-9200 DSP unit that I am going to run. The part that I can't seem to get past in my head and the one thing that I wasn't aware of when I got this thing, is the fact that this unit controls the volume once it is installed rather than the head unit. I wanted to run a 3-way front stage, as I just aquired a set of 2" titanium dome mids and was planing on adding these in with my tweets and 6.5" mid bass. That kills my plans of utilizing one of the decks on-board crossovers to run the dome mids and also there is no unfiltered line out on the DSP to use an amp's crossover, just hi-pass for tweets, a bandpass hi/low pass for the mid-bass and low pass for subs. In all my confusion maybe I am overlooking something obvious here. I wanted to use the DSP to run the three way front end and either the deck or bass amp to cross over the subs. I am going to have a closer look at the manual and see if I can defeat the low pass sub filter and use it unfiltered back to the amp. Ideas?

I can't defeat the low pass filter. Either I scrap the idea of running the dome mids, or I try running the band pass filter with a wider on the DSP, split the signal back at the amps to both dome mid and mid bass amps, then use the amp crossovers to do the final cut, provided that the low pass will go hi enough for the mid bass.????

you'd probly be better to split the midbass and subs at the amps... and use the other outputs for the tweeters/mids.

I'm going to muck around with it tomorrow. I have some more wiring to run yet for the active setup. One way or another I'll make it work but I need to run this through my head a little more.

I wish I could do that but the highest setting on the DSP's low pass filter is 160hz and cannot be shut off, meaning that the signal won't be usable for the midbass.

Maybe have some active's built for the 2"mid/tweet combo which you said was bandpassable?"....there is no real way around this, that dsp is just not made to run 4way..

Your right, it's not. I am on a tight budget with this project, it is my third build up this year. I picked up this DSP new in a sealed box for next to nothing and simply could not say no, so I am going to make it work one way or another. I didn't realize when I got it that it takes over the volume control function from the head unit, so I was originally planning on utilizing the other two sets of RCA outs from the HU unit along with their respective crossovers. Thats what kind of messed up my plans. I think for now I will complete the install leaving the mids installed but not wired in until I can come with a proper work around.

Some opinions on crossover settings and slopes
 

I got the DSP installed less the dome mids for now. I am looking for some feedback on starting settings for crossover points and slopes for the midbass and tweeters. This is really my first all active setup, so a little help from the experienced would be muchly appreciated.

If you are using an existing component set, try and match the comp sets current xover settings, usually found on the web site or in the manual. Start with 24db and play around see what you prefer.

If you can't fint the xo points, tweeter can be usually between 2khz and up, usually not more then 8khz. If you want to start at 2khz, I suggest unplugging all the other drivers and only listening to them while you turn up the volume slowly and see how they take a xover that low. It might be wiser to cut them off at 4khz instead, safer. I woudn't go much higher as the mid might not be able to play that high well.

I would start off at 4khz high pass for tweet, same lp for the mid, and hp the mid at around 80hz.

I guess some driver information would help a little. I am running SMT 6.5" midbass in the doors and SMT 1" textile dome tweeters mounted in the doors at the mirror locations (dash level). What is throwing me off a little bit is that the lowest bandpass setting in the DSP is 2.5khz as is the lowest hi-pass setting. That is currently where I have the two set with a slope setting of -18. I can't try a slope of -24 as it will not let me for bandpass or hi-pass. I want to get the crossover points close and then plug in the mic and run the auto eq function. I am hoping that this will give me a good starting point to begin to fine tune the eq.
