I hear the imprint technology or rather feature requires an additional component in order to work.

No, it doesnt need anything, the shop should be able to tune it for you, whether they charge you for it is another story, the local shop where i bought mine they do it for free, but like some other ppl said this head unit is incredible, first time you turn the car on and listen to something it sounds amazing. I got the ipod adapter with it also, veery nice ipod controls on the deck, no more scroungeing through 1200 songs to find the one you want, lol..also with the ipod the sound quality is alot better. I could go on and on about this deck..lol

CDA-9887.....Good!

I loved the bass engine pro that came with the CDA-9885, but NOBODY liked the glide-touch control bar. And that 1st generation Ipod interface was clunky and slow.
This new head unit is solid. A current favorite in my shop. I've begun using the KTX-100 imprint manager, and while it's a bit time-consuming, the results are worthwhile. The full speed Ipod interface works quickly and seamlessly.
Find a shop that knows its stuff, has the KTX-100 on hand, and be prepared to smile.
I know I am......................

I LIKE my glide touch on the 9855. And it says 'happy new year!', (x-mas, birthday, halloween and July 4th)

Yeah, I got a happy new year from my 9887, and at first I was thinking, "What the deuce?", but then I remembered entering the date.

So is the imprint totally preprogramed when its tuning your system or are you able to change certain parameters when turning with it, ie having time aligment biased towards the driver, etc?

Imprint continued

When I set up a W124 Benz with the imprint system, I had to move the microphone to at least 7 different locations. It seems that the the Imprint makes corrections to sweeten the tuning, depending on which listening location you specify when starting the system. It wasn't a reference system, and the tuning was sufficiently good (time correction, eq and x-over) to sign off on the car. I didn't take the time to try and tweak the parameters arrived at by the Imprint system. Don't know at this time if it's possible. I've got an old F355 coming in next week for a CDA-9887 install. I'll provide an update after that one's in the bag.

It seems most people are not using Imprint. It seems the whole point of this deck is the Imprint.
