I see this old thread keeps coming back to life.

Sorry, don't know much about the kenwood, my son-in-law has one and raves about it. I can't stand the look of the thing.

Anyway, I got my Alpine "Imprinted" and I'm here to rave about it.

I'm Impressed!!!!

Can you elaborate a bit more? I would love for someone who has actually heard all three following hu's and can comment on them:
1. Kenwood x991
2. Alpine 9887
3. Pioneer 880prs

What you get instead of bass or treble is actually superior to them. a seven band eq gives much better flexibility for tuning your sound although it's a little more complicated.

I keep meaning to phone a&bsound and see if they do imprints yet since every single person who's had it done on this forum raves about it!

cheers.
i doubt AB Sound will do imprinting...they don't even carry alpine anymore because Best Buy started carrying the brand...

IMO, if AB Sound can't compete w/ Best Buy's crappy prices, then AB Sound must be in serious trouble...AB Sound's marketing departmend needs to get themselves out of the 80's...i'm surprised they still don't have a decent website yet...

Yes, the imprint (multiEq) will work fine for 2 way or 3 way.

A few installs later......

Having now installed upwards of 2 dozen of these units, I'd like to offer the following observations;

-results obtained using Imprint will vary greatly with only small changes in mic placement. You should run it a couple of times, save the two curves and compare them.

-Imprint has, in my experience, worked best in systems using out-board amplification. When used as an OEM upgrade, I've always ended up with better results when tuning by ear.

-I have had 2 units, out of 30, that needed to be returned for repair.
One had a control panel fault (lights, camera, but no action) and the second had a fault with the main harness. It would spontaneously go into mute mode.
Both items have been repaired and have not failed since.

-The control interface for Ipod, while a vast improvement on the outboard box used on earlier units, could still use some streamlining. The "enter" key needs to be addressed on the volume control in order to be more intuitive and similar to the Ipod control wheel.

Excellent unit, great preamp, superior signal processing, tasteful cosmetics.
Now they'll probably replace it with a dud.

Sorry, kinda like a reoccuring rash bringing up this thread but better than starting a new one. Is there any word on a new price point for this HU? I am looking at getting a new one but would rather a DD but if $350-380 is a good deal I may consider it.

Thanks
Phil

350 is pretty standard for the 9887. Better if your buying a package of stuff

Alpine CDA-9887

Hi Tube doc,

i have few question:
1) when i use KTX-100EQ, can it works for 2 way..eg. i have 2 way compenent system in front..4 chnel amp which 2 chane for tweeter and 2 chanel for mid bass..another mono block amp run subwoofer..then on the switch bottom of HU, do i need to toggle to 3way on NORM??
what is the correct way before start to calibrate with KTX-100EQ, at 4 channel amp need to set to full range, what is the best freq to set for tweeter and mid, also the mono block settitng..because the manual doesnt help so much..some, installer said, need to tune back on amp after calibration with ktx-100eq done..i'm confuse..
2) when i turn down the vol on HU close 0, there is a distorted sound came from woofer coil..is it my woofer "dying" or my mono block "dying"

thanks a lot
