Hey guys,

Here's the deal, I got a 150 watts x 4 chan @ 4 ohm // 300 watts x 4 chan @ 2 ohm stable amplifier. This is going into my winter build, 98 Pontiac Transport Montana.

Because I have a ridiculously stupid powered amp, 1200RMS just for front speakers, I need a sets of components in EACH door. To recap, two (2) mids and two (2) tweets in each door panel.

At the same time, I will be utilizing all four channels. Head unit is a Pioneer P880-PRS allowing me to have a Networking Mode (3 way active xover). On the amp, I could have two (2) channels for mid frequencies each powering their own side, left and right, as well as two (2) channels for the high powering their own side, left and right.

Looks like this:
Ch.1 -> Left Side -> 2 Mids @ 300watts
Ch.2 -> Left Side -> 2 Tweets @ 300watts
Ch.3 -> Right Side -> 2 Mids @ 3000watts
Ch.4 -> Right Side -> 2 Tweets @ 300watts

Stupid right? I know.

I need suggestions on what speakers to get. Hell, I'm not even sure how I could wire this. 300W RMS for some tweeters is absurd. It's going to be party van for pure downtown fun. SO I NEED LOUD but I need them to behave well when I am on my alone time.

Let's keep it under 150$ a pair of speakers ( 2 mids n 2 tweets) and buyable via sonicelectronix.

Hell, we could even think differently. Like 2 channels just for a set of components and keep the passive crossover to split between mid n highs and use the last two channels for like 2 8" mids instead. So I would have 1x8", 1x6"5 and 1xtweeter in each door for example. I duon't know. To many ideas. I need help....

Another question. When they say 4 ohm for a component set, they mean the final impedance with the mid and tweet or each?

Raw drivers in 8 ohm form would fit the bill, drop the power and be loud and clear, but that would be a madisound site deal, not sonic.

A 4 Ohm component set will show the amp a 4 ohm load when using the passive crossover provided. mid or tweet or both hooked up. Its in the xover ;)

A 4 channel 2 ohm stable amp can run 4 - 4 ohm component sets....or 16 drivers ...I'd be cooling the amp well if you do that :p

So if you had at your disposal:


-Active Xover DSP
-350$ to spend on drivers only.
-Skills to make glass door pods
- 150wx4 @ 4ohms / 300wx4 @ 2 ohms Amp
-goal: to have a bumping party van

What would you build? What setup? How to wire it?

I just don't know how to go about it. It's complex to me and I want to learn.

You're budget right now I think is a bit small to get what you want. I would work on you front stage first. A "good" set of components would come first, something for the stock location.
Do some comparison shopping and $200 should get you those.
The last $150 I'd spend on another comp set for the rear. (since you plan of having passengers),,,power both sets on the amp....Save a little more and start adding more then...ie(pods more speaker,go active etc) A couple sets of good comps amplified will still rock you out in the van until you add more......BTW our sq vehicle is a Montana sv6...;)

I wont be doing a rear fills on this. Tis the reason for only putting focus up front. I have the equipment to go active. And like I mean 150$ each before tax and shipping... that can get you a pretty decent set of componenets.. by my standards. This is just my winter car. I blow my money on my summer car. I don't need audiophile grade components. As long as I do everything right and take my time it should be booming. This budget build could really be a cool winter van.

So please, the big question is just how to layout the front stage, what setup would you go with? Not regarding to any brand or prices, just the actual placement/layout/wiring of the front is all I'm asking. I just have a really nice amp putting out some decent amount of power, I would just like to use it at its full potential is possible.

With no rear fill, your passengers will get too much bass...If there is such a thing...lol

I'd skip running the active xover for now, using an active xover with any components passive xover isn't gonna help. If you want active, you should buy some individual drivers. But your short 2 channels of amp for 3 way:ohwell:

You could run active midbass on 2 channels and a 5.25" set of comps on the other two. Could be within your budget.

The only flaw I see in your plan is that a $150 set of comps probably aren't going to take 150wrms or sound that great... If you bought just 1 "better" set, a 3 way comp set, you'd likely have the same volume(cause they can take more power) better sq and you'd have a good start to going active later.

Get a good enough set and you can bridge the amp for some crazy power to them..

If you are after volume, you would be better off looking at $150 coaxials than comp sets as they are almost always louder with the same power.

Sorry guys, I think I got my terminology wrong. When I was saying "component", I was just imagining a 2 driver setup, a High and a Mid. Now I realise I should be saying I want 2 Drivers setup, a High and a Low, managed by an active xover.

The problem I beleive to have is if I hook up 2 Tweeters to one channel out putting 150W, wouldnt they instantaneously blow? So dosen't that mean I should be looking for some nice high impedance tweeters to bring the final RMS output down? Do I have the right idea going here?

The other possibility I was talking about in my first post is described below. Maybe it will make more sense now.

This is where I got my 8" Driver, on one channel, and a Component set, running on another channe,per side and THAT said component set would be managed with the supplied passive xover and use the active xover to manage the 8" Driver channel and the Component channel independently.

How does that sound?

- A 8" driver on one channel per side
- A component set powered by another channel per side
- For a total of two used channels PER side
- The 8" Driver and Component Set would be managed by the active xvoer
- The component would still use its passive.

Is this making sense or am I way out on a limb? To hard? Or just stupid?
