Putting 5.25 or 61/2 in boxs

I am thinking of putting my speakers in little box then mount them into the doors . I have tested with the windows down and they clear pretty good. So my question is how would they sound in cabinets vs conventional placements

Thumbs up Little Boxes

Building boxes in doors is a pain in the butt...

The payoff in terms of better sound would probably be un-noticeable to most people. If you seal off the door panel, deaden the door skins inside and out and make sure the speakers are mounted securely, that's about at good as it gets....

The SQ fanatics here will wax poetic about kick panel build-ups and other exotic solutions to speaker placement, but unless and until your ears have been trained to hear the difference, save your $$ and keep the aggravation level down... Spending 2 months and lots of time and money building enclosures will cut down on the fun factor bigtime...

Talking

Sigh...

Having seen the work you've done, and the pics you've posted of that work, I am quite prepared to admit you probably know more about this sort of thing than I do.....having said that....lighten up dude....

For the record, over the last 30 years, I have heard 3 different vehicles with enclosures built in the doors. All were built up with fiberglass and MDF, and for all the effort that went in to them, even the people who built them said that the end results, although better than the original IB install, were hardly worth the effort. Again, this was their opinions, not mine. I did not tell boombox what he would hear, I said the improvement would be lost on most people.

ahhhh how refreshing a true expert opinion, oh yeah anmd since when did learning something new about how speakers work and maybe imporoving your install skill be considered taking the fun out of car audio, perhaps the case for you....... anyway i have built many boxes for mids, they have always yielded better reslutls that a typical ib setup. keep in mind this is only true if the correct box volume can be attained, otherwise you end up with very poor response just like most of the kickpanels in the world
I have never represented myself as an expert, here or on any of the other boards I post on. As an enthusiast for 3 decades plus, I think I know a fair bit about this stuff, but I am always ready to learn more. My enthusiasm has not dimmed over the years, in spite of my experiences with some really arrogant and annoying people I have met.

I would not consider doing this kind of door build-up a DIY project for a beginner, unless you happen to have an installer friend you could call for advice on the fly....

I hope this clarifies things to your satisfaction, Defro13.....having seen the pics of the job you did on the Neon, I have a great deal of respect for your install skills..... , however it is my sad duty to inform you that your typo-itis is getting worse.....

Now it's time to get out to the driveway, there's a pair of JL 10W0's in my basement waiting for a new home...

Ya'll have a great afternoon!

Boombox - what are you trying to achieve by adding the enclosures?

I put some cheap 5 1/4 inch coaxes in small sealed enclosures in the kickpanels once and I found them to handle a significantly higher power without bottoming out and they sounded more accurate and punchy in the midbass frequencies. However the low end suffered, but if your crossover opint on your subwoofer system is high enough, this should not be a concern. I have no idea if all midrange speakers act this way though... Just throw together a couple tiny boxes and tape them in place and see what you think before you put too much effort into it?? I'd love to hear your feedback.

well i am running the tweeters up front in the dash and then putting the mid boxs in the doors panels trying to get a bit more bass out of the system. I doubt i will run a sub in my vehicle thats why i wanted a little punch in the doors \.

^^^ I currently have my utopias (6's) in sealed enclosures in the doors... Ihave been wanting to change them over to ported enclosures for quite some time now, but buiding the port has always been the hinderence... not to hi-jack, but do you have any tips on building ports out of fiberglass for shallow set-ups? or if I should be making / using a 100% glassport at all.

thanks, Mark
