I've been looking for a new midrange driver for a few weeks now. The Scan Speak 15W/4531G00 5" woofer seems to stick out in my mind right now mainly because I have actully heard the unit. Scan also makes a 7" version but I'm not sure if it will pull off the mid frequencies as well (150Hz-3K range)being as it's a larger driver. I don't need the driver to play really low since I just picked up midbass woofers. My final goal is ofcourse to have really nice midrange, and I would like to cap off my spending for these unit's at $500.

If anyone has any experience with the Scans or has a suggestion for what they think will compare in my price range please feel free to coment.

ScanSpeak has been around for a long time, and is a venerable loudspeaker manufacturer. Many of today's loudspeakers use ScanSpeak drivers.
What application are you planning to use it in? Car, home?

IMO that statement right there would seem to make the 5" the right choice.

I have those drivers, but unfortunately I can't tell you too much about them. I had them very temporarily mounted in my old car, and although they were kinda thrown in there they still sounded very good (they can actually hit quite low for the size). I bought a new car (which is why I didn't spend the time setting them up in my old car) and haven't got them in yet. I'll let you know how they are if I can every get around to putting them in properly.

Dukk, that why I figured that the 5" would be best. But I figured I would ask because the 7" has such a good reputation.

These units will be mounted in my kicks most likely. I have 2 subs (midbass) that I'm putting in my dash.

What would be the difference between the F1 and the raw Scan???

The driver you're talking about is actually considered a 5.5" driver (just checked my box to make sure). If you're just using it for midrange, you might want to look at the 4"....I think the model is 12M/4631G00. From what I've seen, most people tend to use this one when doing a 3-way setup.

i had the 4" revelator. couldn't recomend a better driver for a 3 way set up. usable frequency range from 200 hz all the way up to 6 khz! that's one source for most human voices right there!
the only comparable driver i've heard was the 4" Seas Lotus. you wouldnt' go wrong with either one!

there is alot of difference betwwen the alpine and scanspeak version. if you could see the 2 beside each other the physical differences are vwer obvious. the alpine has a lower fs, different re an so on. the cone has been doped on the alpine version to make more durable in vehicles. the sound is different as well, both sound very good, but in a car i would tend to go with the alpine as it is built to withstand changing temps(condensation)better. the alpine and scan both play well up to 5-5.5k and in my car i hipass tha alpine at 40hz at 12db/octave in 6 litres sealed and the work very well for me

for 7" ill take scan speak revelator.
for 4" ill take seas lotus.
