Setting up Pdx-5

Hey everyone new to site and have a question I can't find a answer too..

I have a Pdx-5 running mtx thunder 6.5" component set up front in the doors and kenwood 3 way 6x9's in the rear...

Now the question is I can't for the life of me figure out what the crossover settings should be on the amp for these speakers so they sound the best.

Anyhelp would be huge!!

Highpass 80-120hz for the MTX, perhaps a little lower on the Kenwoods depending where you cross over the sub.

^^exactly...and then once you listen to it for a while...you can start playing with the crossover points untill you're happy with the sound. You may find those initial settings the best, so always document your settings so you can go back to them incase it sounds like crap!

really hp filter for the mtx? even when they have 6.5 drivers?

Dukk 08-23-2011 02:14 PM

Try it. If you like it loud, and it goes deep, those 6.5 are going to have problems much below 60hz so best to pad it a bit. Ultimately it depends on how active a listener you are - too many people just wang on their system not hearing how the drivers are bottoming or distorting so I try to stay conservative.

How high are you crossing the sub?

well here's how it went.

i bought the car, stereo was blah so i bought front mtx 6.5" components and 3 way kenwood 6x9s for the rear, head unit stock...

left it like that for a few months and got tired of that it was too quiet and sounded under powered, while it was clear it didnt go very loud.

so i bought the pdx amp to run the speakers, well that just made it sound worse, horrible static and engine noise. tried a noise supressor helped a bit not enough.

so last week i went out and bought a jvc kw-xr810 deck, sirius adapters and tuner, two 12" pioneer subs and yeh, just waiting to install that stuff next week...

so basically I am asking what should i set it all to...

I'm very good at installing car audio and setting the gain etc. but when it comes to crossover settings its pita to me..

Ballpark settings to start with:

Sub: 60-80hz
Comps/6x9s: 60-100hz high pass - start on the higher side and lower it until the speakers can't tolerate it. Here's a tip: Having a small gap between the two like 60hz lowpass on the sub and 80hz high pass on the others is ok too - you'll never hear it and it can take out a lot of the annoying boominess some cars exibit.
