Well, I wired up my chameleons, and surprise surprise.. both mids are defective. I did wire them up briefly to test them when I got them in september, but I never installed them properly, or ran much power through them.

I had the winter blues, so I decided to install them in my doors temporarily. I just used the onboard amp on my nakamichi to power them. As soon as I raised the volume, the sound was heavily distorted. Upon closer inspection, it seems the cone was not joined to the basket properly, and the cone was moving at a slight angle. Sounds almost like the voice coils are grinding against the magnet. One of them is much worse than the other, but both are clearly defective.

I bought them after auditioning them in a friend's car. I really loved the sound. Great off-axis, smooth response, high power handling, tight midbass and great overall sound.

I had a similar problem with an IDQ10 I bought last year. So far, I'm not too impressed with ID's craftsmanship. I thought 'made in the usa' was a good thing

Luckily, since I bought them from sounddomain, I'm covered under warrantee, as they are an authorized dealer. I'm going to have to give ID a call on monday, and hope that the next set I get will be okay.

I've heard others talk about problems with chameleons.. anyone care to share their negative experiences with ID products and their customer service?

Could that be it? Possibly selling b-stock or maybe a pair or two of them slipped in their warehouse?

You know.. it wouldn't surprise me one bit..

The defective IDQ I bought was from them as well. Makes you wonder if ID ships them refurbished products at a discounted rate.

ID has always had a problem with QC (quality control). You either great a great product, or a defective one.

Lemonlime, just buy my utopia's in a few months .

Chev2: You know I will Just let me know when you are ready to part with them...

Should have gone with Focal in the first place, oh well.

When I get my replacement chameleons, they are going on ebay :(

Curious to understand where this comes from. Is this based on you're experience or on what you've over-heard??? Just for the record, I have nothing to do with ID business wise........... just curious

.

And also from friends of mine in private conversations (Not from reading some internet post about it).

ID makes a great product.. But there QC could be better.

I should add that customer service was great, and the replacement product worked perfectly.

Chev, I don't assume too much anymore. People get swayed and go to the dark side easily now-a-days. I know, I go there visiting once in a while :D

Man, come to think of it... almost all the ID stuff I have owned has blown or was received not in working order.

I've been through an IDQ v.1 10", 2 ID V.2 12", and IDQ v.2 12". Right now I've got an ID v.2 12" and it seems to be the most stable one, even though I'm severely overpowering it, and the others were getting only between 200 and 500 watts.

I just hope that the new Max we acquired holds up as well as I hope. It would be a shame to get another ID bunk.

The worst part is I cannot get enough of ID. They definately have some of the better sounding products available.
