What makes an SQ sub an SQ sub? What features and t/s parameters are needed to have a great/good/bad sounding sub?

I think a sub that is linear throughout its excursion and has a fairly flat frequency response is an SQ sub.

Price... Focal makes 'SQ' subs, and they're high priced - therefore, all 'SQ' subs are high priced.

Look for the most expensive that you can afford, and you're set!

TS parameters mean jack when looking for an SQ sub. a good SQ sub has good transient respone, decent sensitivity. a broad frequency range is a must, as well as the ability to play very low in a reasonable enclosure.

Tight signal tracking, high linear excursion, low inductance, and a rigid cone...

Install/application comes first in most cases.. and can make/break any system...

There are a number of good points made about what typifies a quality driver.
For me, I look for construction and engineering qualities of the basket to the motor structure, the shape of the basket, the cone, venting of the coil, I also check the compliance of the suspension, and finally give it a gentle thump with my fist to the magnet, and listen to it's natural resonance.
I found that bell shaped baskets that are mounted closer to the coil/inside edge of motor, tend to ring or add colour(great for SPL), and baskets that are closely mounted to the outside edge of the magnet sound tighter(for SQ).
