SQL amp & sub config

So I need some opinions about possible sub & amp set ups. My previous configuration was a 4 ohm MTX MSX 1204 12" rated at 400wrms paired with an ol' MTX Thunder 8204 rated at 350wrms, in a sealed 1.25cft box and capped. The sound quality and depth were fantastic. The problem was that the MTX amp was having control issues, it would lose control of itself when ever it got cold or humid. Finally I replaced it with a Pioneer D8500M which is rated at 300wrms, simply because the price was right and all the wiring lined up exactly the same. The problem is that the Pioneer amp just doesn't have enough push for the MTX sub and the sound quality is not as good. If I push this amp just a fraction too hard the sub will start clipping (snapping). No matter what crazy way I set the old MTX amp, it wound never ever do this. So, I was thinking of getting an Apline S type 4D (dual voice 4 ohm) rated at 500wrms and running the Pioneer amp (mono) in 2 ohm in which case it would output 600wrms. I'm not sure what the SQL will be like if I do this, but it is much cheaper that option 2, which is to replace the Pioneer amp with something from the high end of MTX, Hertz, Apline etc. Any thoughts on this?

snapping sound would have me worried that is not normal even for clipping. have you looked into any non box store brands? they offer a better value for the most part. look into brands like fi car audio, DC audio. IA, sundown audio. where are you located ? maybe we can send you to a good shop near you.
