tweeter a pillar , fiberglass

have tried a few tweeter spots over the years. this year i will try a new spot.
objective is to get more height ,width and ambience. hopefully i can use the reflective nature of the glass to enhance sound.

there are a few ways to make a tweeter pod for your a pillar. i didnt want to build it in, rather on top. just in case the glass and height is over powering.

the resin is no smell
the flocking kit come from lee valley
made a simple tool to get the tweeter same axis as mid
laid a resin base
mount trim ring
stretch fabric to create enclosure
one layer of fiber and multiple resin layers
fill and sand
mount with a few screws and wingnuts
paint with black glue and flock

took in all 4 hours. most time was 30 mins at one session. most was just putting on resin layers maybe 20 mins to mix and . i messed a little on the flocking with some weak spots. turned out great overall.

Honestly can say that I've NEVER seen tweets mounted that way in a car.......... and that's not to say that it's wrong either. Just I've not seen this config. Anyone care to discuss what is trying to be achieved by mounting them like this.

That third picture definitely sets them to be firing in the same direction. But is it a "special" distance from the mid........... why not mount it closer and further down the A-pillar ?

Maybe just the pictures, but any issues with bumping into these when getting in and out of the car ?

Nice work.
Are u using TA? Is the tweeter being attenuated or is it an active setup? How far is the tweet from your ear?

Junkinthetrunk 05-04-2011 06:24 AM

I may be wrong but here's a few thoughts. Driver's side tweet will be a LOT closer to the driver then the passenger side tweet, although it's off-axis positioning helps. Regardless, the signal will need to be tampered with electronically I'd think as the PLD's gotta be way off.

I'm thinking this setup, considering it's location, must present a wide stage as it's really off the left side of your head. But I'd think it's a trade-off. Then again, what in car audio isn't. I personally would have built the tweety off the left side of that mid. BTW, absolutely liking that mid setup. I WISH my ride had dash mounted cutouts like that. DAMN........

I agree with Tommyboy - that is certainly an interesting arrangement.

I think this location is going to cause more problems than it solves. Even with electronic help, there is just too much difference in path lengths and the tweeter seems to be too far forward of the mid.

Time will tell.

This project (especially placement and tweeter aiming) has given me a great idea for my Skyline GTR.......

I can pick up matching Single, Double or Tripple gauge pods for Driver's and Passenger's sides of the car.

A Single for the passenger with Tweeter only and a double or tripple for the driver with a gauge or 2....and a tweeter.

I think I am going to contemplate this and see how yours turns out, as the aiming & placement is SSOooo similar.

last 3 years i have done as you have mentioned. so i know i can always go back. just for giggles i thought i would try this. all your comments are very reasonable. the proximity is the big issue. hope to start tuning in a few weeks.
with the tweets down by the mid i had great separation medium height and little width. so now higher and wider. hopefully its a failure and the decision to go back is an easy one.
