I just installed 2 Kenwood Excelon KFC-XW1025dB's in a sealed box and have them running off of a JL 500/1 and I have to say I am a bit dissapointed with both the SQL and SPL. The subs hit only moderately hard and sound a bit muddy. I had good experiences with the Memphis M-Class 12 inch subs for SQL purposes so I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on how 4 eight inch M-Class Memphis subs would sound compared to the 2 Kenwoods.

I am also considering swapping the Kenwoods for 2 of the Memphis 10 inch subs (the Memphis subs are a lot TIGHTER than the Kenwoods)!

Try a ported enclosure. If you don't have the airspace to port two tens then consider a single 12" sub capable of higher output and matching the 500/1 and run it ported.

 

I am also going to have to say go with a 12, you are going to be hard pressed to get the same low frequency extension out of a 10 or especially an 8. I am actually getting rid of the 2 10's in my car in favour of a single 12 for SQ purposes.

More cone area = more bottom end. </font>[/QUOTE]My tens are very punchy and can get plenty loud but just they just dont have the greatest externsion in the lower frequency range, and as I compete in IASCA I real need an even response throught the sub frequency range.

 

Oh yeah and also my two tens dont have alot of cone area due to the oversized surround.

 

Well, after more tweeking (I spend too many waking hours of my life tweeking amps) the two 10 inch Kenwoods are sounding better. I still think I will try four eight inch subs one day just to see how it sounds. I think I will have more surface area than with the two tens and I might get a better quality response between 60-80 Hz. Thanks for the input.

Cone area and displacement = more SPL.
It's the sub/box design that produces SQ.
