my preliminary measurments tell me that i can get about .55 cubic ft of airspace behind my factory door panel and to the window in the door. i have looked on my design program and it says that the midrange( an avi bsm160 6.5 midrange-bass) will work great in this application. i consulted the manufacturer and they said that the speaker works very well vented. i am going to build it with the speaker in the front bottom of the door(a 2002 neon) and i am going to port it out the back of the door panel. it seems that very few people do this and i was wondering why, is it because it doesnt work well, poor power hadling, i have done some research and it seems to me that many of the 5.25" and 6.5" speakers available today will work very well ported, low moving mass and low qts etc, sorry for the long post but i have many ? regarding this

I would speculate that it's not so much anything to do with porting or not, but rather the difficulty in building an actual dedicated enclosure inside a door. I just traded in my 2002 Neon R/T. How do you plan on building a box inside the door? There also comes the question of where do you tune the midbass to? Subs have a pretty limited frequency range so choosing a frequency to tune to isn't too difficult but a midbass/midrange speaker covers a much wider range. What do you plan on tuning to?

i am going to tune to the fs of the speaker 59.5hz or as close as possilble, geting the space is easy, mold the inside of the factory plastic panel .35 cubic ft with minor mods to inside panel, cut existing holes in door slightly larger to allow the mold to the window to come out, i dont believe that tuning to a particular freq will affect the midrange response as all im doing is tuning the low end rather than that of an iffinite baffle configuration, most smaller home bookshelf speakers are vented for more accurate low end response and the q of the box will be .75- .85 so i was thinking i should be ok and they should sound amazing, i have already mounted and avi 6.5 woofer in the dash, removed the pass side airbag, redid all vents with flexible hose, took the factory wire tray out and ran all the wires flat behind the guages and along the large squre factory dash support, got .68 cubic feet tuned to 57hz the port runs beside the factory radio bezel and vents out to the left of the factory radio bezel, a ****load of work i tell you,the woofer mounts just to the right of center in the dash between the modified defroster vent and front of the facoty dash panel that i reupholsterd in leather to match the seat, looks very cool, havent heard it yet but should work very well, i hope

So you mean that the gap between the plastic outer panel and inner metal door skin amounts to .35 cu. ft.?? I didn't ever take off the panel on my R/T but should not the panel fit tightly agains the metal skin? Got any pics? Sounds like an interesting project.

There ya go, Chad. Another 8" door-pod build up for you. :D

not sure how to post pics so give me your email address and i'll send them to you, yes there is a total of .53 cubic ft in total, ive finished building them, you have to use avery square inch but it fits behing the factory plastic panel and out to the window,.53 tuned to 58hz

the 8" should fit well in the doors, you will have to build new grills though. i have the pics on my computer at home, i will email them to you tonite when i get home

THe soundstage height and imaging seems pretty decent in the factory locations for those what do you think?
