I am going to go out on a limb and say the headunit because it is your cd player and preamp.
Opinions?

I think it goes like this
1:installation
ties second place
2:speakers
2:xover/eq (signal processor)
4:CD player
5:Amplifier
I doubt we will all come to a conclusion since people beleive differently. In my experience, amps or dacs dont seem to change the sound as much (or at all) as installation ,speakers or eq\xover can.
Although the amplifier one could move up considerably if you were to swap in a more powerfull one, more power can do a lot for how a system sounds.

Ok, you're all a bunch of dumb-azz rookie nerf herders There no one particular piece that's the most important. It all has to work together as a system........... you can't seperate parts and try to define what's the most important. That's just dumb-azz Ha, ha, ha........ after all the crap that's been posted on this forum about "SYSTEMS" working together, everyone should know this by now. Nothing is stand alone. HELLOoooooooooooooooo. Sorry, didn't mean to **** on this thread........ "if" someone did ask me to pick the one most important aspect for a good sounding car, it would be INSTALL/installer skillz. This alone can bring crappy equipment back from the dead.

It's only as good as the weakest part.
Weak of course meaning worst performing and not cheapest. A part twice as expensive as another doesn't necesarily make it better performing.
The weakest part is usually the owner or installer making the wrong decisions on equipment and/or installion.

I will concede that installation is critical; moreover, you can have all the expensive gear you want -- if the install sucks, the system sucks.
After reading everyone's posts I have to say that I am disappointed that many people give one word answers and don't use reasoned points or examples in their answers. I am not saying I am right or wrong... I just wanted to hear some reasoned answers to this question.
