where to start with sound deadner?
where are the most important places to start other than the trunk? and is 100sq ft decent to start with

Depends on what you are trying to do. If you are primarily trying to get better sound and you have door speakers, then that is where to start. If your car is noisy then the floor and roof.
The only time I do a trunk is if it is rattling or something. |

so how much you think i can accomplish with 100 sq ft if i were to do 1 layer? and should the roof and floor be considered for sq purposes?

measure the areas in the vehicle (doors, roof and floor) with a tape measure and that will give you an idea of how much material will be needed.

I think you need to tell everyone a bit more information on your setup first. Things like: what are your speaker locations, the type of car noise presently existing in your ride, and what is your end SQ goal? It also makes a difference on how good a deadener you are using and how good you apply it as well. For my new car (which had pronounced road and engine noise), I used about 70 sq. feet in my front doors + another 50 in my rear doors which were used for bass extension 6.5" woofers. I also did not want a sub box in this setup. I used left-over bits of deadener throughout the car to control metal panel vibrations... just tap the car body and listen to the sound. Some cars have heavily built panels while others have tinny sounding panels - only you will know where your car needs attention. On the doors, I deadened the speaker mounting surface, the opposite baffle side, and also the inner door sheet metal. The deadening treatment gave me a quieter (and smoother) ride and a much more full, solid sound from the front speakers. It also gave me that impressive "heavy door" closing sound! car is a 2003 nissan sentra spec v, speakers are in the stock locations, tweets in pillars, mids in door and rear speakers in the rear deck. road noise is pretty noticable its only a little japanese tin can. end goal is to get that full clear sound that beats loud and kicks your back seat.
i know untill i get the speakers out of the stock locations im not going to get the greatest performance. i just need something that sounds better than it is right now and i think deadner would really help i have morel dotech ovation comps for the front, kenwood excellon x794 deck, morel tempo coax's for rear, 2 jbl p1224 subs in a sealed box, eclipse ea4000 for the front stage and sundown saz2000d for the subs and it doesnt seem much diff from the stock setup other than the xtra base. i never amped the front stage yet either. should i sound deaden behind the pillars too? |
You have selected great speakers. To get the most out of them you really "NEED" to treat the doors and eventually put some real clean power to your front stage speakers. You will find sonic gains unachievable any other way.
I have had my last 3 vehicles sound deadened to varying degrees, but progressively more and more were used as I became aware of how effective the stuff really is. My previous car, a Toyota sedan, was a more quiet car and did not have nearly as much deadener in it as my present Mazda3. I did not rush with the application though - I did a little each weekend. It took me almost the whole Summer to finish! |
Yup, you don't quite get a grasp of how big of a difference it makes until you properly deaden one door then fade between left and right.. can't wait till spring so i can finish my deadening project.
I would definitely amp your speakers when possible if you're going to sound deaden doors though. |
