15 xxx not impressing...what could it be?

I have a 15 re xxx installed in a 2.2 cubic feet sealed box. Its running off an earthquake PH-D2. I'm not impressed at all. I've read so many threads on these subs and it sounds like everyone loves their xxx subs but for some reason mine doesnt sound good nor does it hit hard. I'm sure im feeding it enough power but the bass is so weak that it gets drowned out by the midbass coming from my components. I know there's something wrong. When i put in bass testing cds it bottoms out very easily. It doesnt get loud but just bottoms out. I've checked the voltage, grounds, the box has no leaks. what else should i look at? thanks guys.

Sounds like you've got one of the coils hooked up backwards, and they're fighting each other, and cancelling each other out. You would get little cone movement as well. Insure that they are wired the same. If you're running a dual channel amp bridged, you may need to flip one of the 180 phase switches on the amp, try it, use whichever sounds best and moves the cone most.

And is the box designed well, or just slapped together? We slapped one together for my 18" APX, way more cone, more power, everything perfect gear wise, but a **** poorly designed box, and it was 10db quieter than my 12" H2, soley because of the poor box.

is there any way i can use a multimeter to check to see if one of the coils is hooked up wrong or do i have to pull the sub out and do the battery trick to see the cone move out?

Remember that xbl^2 drivers don't have much output above 50-60hz, so it will not 'seem' loud to most people who are used to the most output in that range.
If you have the room, port that thing, there's a huge difference in output.

I have a 12 ported and I'm quite satisfied with the way it performs.

I'm not sure how you bottom out the xxx in that box with that amp, I could believe that for sure in a bigger sealed box, but that box seems to be okay.

If you make sure it's hooked up correctly, then i dont know lol.

9v battery to your wires should make the cone move out when + is to + and - to -

There is nothing wrong with your sub or box, one sub systems don't work! ...unless your a SQ enthusiast. Your cars intereior is too big to incorporate enough SPL inside it to shake your eardrums...one 15" cone does not have sufficient surface area to move 1000-2000~litres of cabin~airspace in front of it...I suffered the exact same problem, I was using 1-13" JLW7...powered with about 500~WATTS~RMS...and it really sounded weak and fatigued and actually was overpowered by my front-stage...I then eventually installed another W7...and the difference in SPL was as night and day...the bass sounded deeper and fuller...and displayed dynamic transients that slammed your ears, incorporating plenty of sound pressure inside the cabin. Definatly consider buying another sub...it is not worth you being disatisfied with somthing that can be easily remedied with a simple addition utilizing the same power.

if one needs more than one properly installed 15" xxx or w7, then he must be spl nut and should just get a different sub. Both mentioned subs are more than capable of pumping out enough with > 1kw of power in any car.

One sub systems don't work? Say what?

Mine works. One little 12 inch H2 sub. One ~3 cu. ft. box with dual ports, both open for ~50hz competition, and one plugged for ~33hz daily use. Two 1200d amplifiers. One big empty cargo van.

146.2dB certified (146.6 is my best), dBDrag SS1-2 NW.
Daily music?
10/10 imaging.
7/10 width (whoops forgot to the set position to left).
Loud enough that your nose gets itchy, and your eyes play tricks on you. Too loud even, the rear view mirror won't stay still, photos and papers go flyin', etc.

No, dude should insure that the sub is wired correctly, and get it out of that sealed box. A ported box will improve output by 10 to 15 dB, such as mine did when I moved from sealed to ported.

ok guys, here's what i've found so far. Both coils are wired correctly. Cone moves outwards when i use a 9v battery. Here's where the problem is. When i play sine waves, the sub does not bottom out, even when fully cranked. It gets very loud like its supposed to. When i play music with lots of double bass, thats where the sub starts making a very loud slapping sound that can be heard over the bass. I dont know whether its bottoming out or if its the tinsel leads slapping the cone. Since i've never had another xxx or brahma i do not know what the tinsel slap is supposed to sound like. Can it get that loud?
PS. the sub bottoms out before even xmax. When i play sine waves it moves out so much more and does not make that sound. I need help.
thanks guys.
