1998 Volkwagen Golf Install Questions

Hello All,

Got a few questions about a install in my new car.

I just picked up a 1998 Volkswagen Golf hatchback with the 2.0 I4.

It has the "premium" audio package and i was wondering if i need a special harness for it as it has dash speakers aswell.

What tool do I need to get the stock head unit out?

allways buy the harness and antena adapter. and to remove the HU welll... its a set of 2 keys but i forgot where to get em.. or drop in future shop or something give the guy 5$ to just slap the key in there to pull it out a bit and then u can proceed with ur install..

the center speaker wont work anymore once u change the HU unless u go with a JBL MS-8 or the new alpine something 900 that will be coming out and u could run 5.1 like ur stock radio if thats what u wish

I know that I had to buy a harness and a antena adaptor but the question was is there a different harness for the premium package opposed to the standard package, I have only seen one harness that is avilable for it and doesn't specifiy either or.

Will I need those keys every time I need to pull out my aftermarket deck or is it just used on the stock deck.

On mine there is no center speaker, just a left and right on the dash

If you are replacing the factory deck with an aftermarket one no, you just need them to get it out the first time. Like Danyman said just find a shop that will do it for you and away you go. Your aftermarket deck will come with it's own keys to use with it, make sure they are included if you buy it used.

does the holes look like a pin or a little slot? if its the slot.. what i did is find the keys that come with a pioneer deck, trim the little hump thats on it and i used that.. worked but takes patience

The Premium systems usually interface with the regular harness just fine. Make sure to hook up the remote wire if it's amp'd and the volume may be a bit touchy if putting high level into a low level amp, but u should be good to go
