That's the setup I'm planning, using some older stuff, but buying a new Head Unit.
It's in an 03 Altima, which has the 6x9s on the rear deck and 5 1/4" door speakers. In addition to my old gear, I'm also planning to put some new drivers in there, and hook to another amp.
Most of the head units I'm seeing have three preouts.
But if I've got preouts for the two subs, fronts and rears, what about the other speakers?
So many people run systems with more than the common fronts, rears and subs; there must be a solution -- what is it?
Thanks!

passive or active crossovers or processors. I've got a centre channel, 3 way front, rear comps, and subs...I use a combination of an Alpine pxa h701 processor, active/passive crossovers for the front 3 way and rear comps....in total I have 13 drivers, 8 channels of processing, and 2 sets of passive crossovers to split the mid/tweet frequencies up front and to cross the mid to tweet in the rear.

Carputer with sound card. You now have at least 7.1 (8 preouts) of audio. It will cost about as much as a new deck (~$200) but the screen is a different story. Especially mounting a screen.
Oh and I dont see why you need more then front L/r, rear l/r, sub l/r. You didn't say anything about going active. Your tweeter + door speaker is one preout (2 preouts, if you count both left and right sides).

Run a 4ch. in 2ch. input mode to run 4 front speakers. Rear pre-outs to rear amp, sub to sub. Do this to run a semi active front without using processors. If you want to run active or a processor (which you didn't mention) then go that direction. You can go fully active without using processors, but the tunability (time alignment etc.) will be sacrificed for simplicity
