I just received an Orion HCCA 250 G4 that I bought from the states and it is making all kinds of weird noises/sounds.

When there is no music signal, there is audible static. Then when the LP or HP filters are engaged (or disengaged) the woofer either pops forward or sucks back in a regular interval making a 'thumping' sound.

The frequency of the 'thumping' of the woofer increases as the gain is increased. The static can be filtered out with the filters, but no matter what, the output is never clear.

It has nothing to do with the wiring because I have used the same wiring to test other amps before and after this one.

Might this be a bad transistor?

prolly a cheap fix, sounds like a crossover prob to me

Yea I know you said your wiring is good... but go over it again... in particular, make sure the neg on the RCA cables isn't touching ground anywhere and the cables and inputs on the amp are solid...

The 'thumping' you describe is indicative of signal ground being directly coupled to chassis ground.....

well if you know enough about it to say he is wrong about his diagnosis, then one would assume that you would have an opinion of your own about what it could be ..rather than just shutting him down without explaination

All I can say is that Ive seen similar symptoms in amps when ground on the rca behind the deck was touching chassis ground and a couple times when the rca terminal inside an amp had broken off and was touching the amps chassis... it can cause you to pick up all kinds of noise and the thumping is from feedback between input and output origionating from a turn on pop or in this case a pop when the xover circuitry is activated...

I dont know if thats the problem or not... but Id be interested to hear why its definatly not the problem....

indeed
