Bi-directional Sub Polarity

I've got this box in my trunk that has 2x12" facing the rear of the car (each with a separate sealed section) and 2x8" facing the front (one common sealed section for the two 8's). I'm thinking there must be a lot of cancellation or something so I'm looking for some experience or ideas from other guys here.

Over the next week I'm going to try powering just the front facing 8's. Then after a couple days I'll try just the rear facing 12's. I'll also try reversing the polarity of the 8's and running them with the 12's.

For what it's worth I'll post what I find for the rest of this thread, maybe it will help out someone else one day.

Try removing the 8s altogether. It will probably sound better and go louder.

Yeah, this experiment is temporary until the winter. At least one 8" is going in my wifes car (the other will be spare). I'm going to rebuild the box, this time ported just for the 2x12's.

It's probably needless to say, but here goes anyway.............

Sound was pretty muddy with all 4 subs.
Just the 8's was not enough bass.
With the polarity reversed on the two 8's and all 4 subs powered the bass kind of had a sound of it's own that didn't have too much to do with the music.
Just the 12's.............much better.
