A couple Amature Questions

best way is to check th mounting holes to see if the subs have ever been mounted. The screws always dent/rub paint off the frames. Second test is the sniff test (if they have been mounted) if anything smells burnt, they have been abused. Passing those tests.. should suffice. Specially if they were never mounted.

Although I will feel a little strange sniffing a strangers speaker
makes sence though.

In car audio, your nose is the second most important tool, next to your ears...which are actually closer to your eyes, but you get the point

It means that if it is "some guy" selling subs for a "great deal", are they stolen (so ask for a receipt), used or abused, or just plain the guy has the receipt, they are new and meter as such and smell as such and you found a good deal.
