Crossover ??

Finally got back to my buddy's car

it was the Crossovers for the MB Quart.
so no amp just deck power.
as soon as you hook up the crossovers even if there is no speakers hooked up to the crossovers it starts to cut out at mid to high volume

anyone ever hear of this?
I guess the xovers have too much resistance

Were the passive crossovers / component set on an amp or just the deck? Many deck amplifiers do not like to run passives - as far as I cna figure it adds too much reactance to the circuit and freaks it out.
