I have an old set of clarion components from my car that i will be installing to my truck, currently i just have a 4.7microfarad capacitor between the mid the the tweeter (wired in parrallel), will this be ok for my truck? is there significant sound quality to be gained with a crossover? (maybe something like this: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...764566992&rd=1 ) or maybe add an additional capacitor before the mid, although im not sure what size it would require...
im running them off a jvc sd-lh910 head... thanks! |
I think that is a cheesy way. it will work... but to do it right and make it sound better i think you should get some crossovers.

^ The "right thing" to do would be to build the correct crossover for his drivers - not to buy some random premade piece from another set.
Had you checked the link you would have found that the ones he is looking at are unsuitable. Zorac - what exactly are you trying to achieve? What do you not like about the setup right now? |
i bought them ages ago (6 years?) and got them crazy cheap because they had no crossovers with them, the store i bought them from threw in the capacitors and said thats all i would need. at the time it seemed like a great solution, the components sounded waaaay better than the coaxels i had previously installed and blown, and so i was happy. but unfortantly that car blew up, and i can't get spit for the speakers, but they still work perfectly so im going to reinstall them in my new vehicle with my new head unit. its seemed wrong to run a mid without filtering the base out though, and i want to avoid blowing a wad of cash on expensive crossovers.. adding an addtional capcitor seemed like the ideal solution as it would be easy to install and should give some gain in performance from the mid. unfortantly i didtn know the capacitance needed. crossovers seemed like a good idea as well to get better performace from the speakers, but i have no idea what the the numbers mean, and ive been leary of buying something without knowing if its actually what i need, i though that any 2 way car audio cross over would be geared to a mid and tweeter rather than just highs and lows...

would anyone know waht microfarad cap i would use to filter the bass out for the mid?

IF you are looking to only restrict the bottom end then try 100uf or 200uf caps. 200uf is 200hz and 100uf is 400hz.

400hz is pretty high, and capacitors are cheap. Go to radio shack, by a mixed bag of capacitors and hear for yourself what you want.
As for your wiring, either one will work. But to keep the crossover points unaffected by each other, go with B. |
^ A cap is only 6db/octave though so, depending on the 'robustness' of the driver he may not want to go lower [img]graemlins/dunno.gif[/img]

Why not buy a inexpensive electronic crossover, that way there is also some adjustibility to set your comps at what you like. Correct me if I'm wrong but don't passive crossovers rob power?
