Dimmer vs. Illumination wire

On my Metra wiring harness adapter (for 1997 Sunfire) there are both a positive dimmer wire and an illumination wire.

What is the difference between the two?

It is being connected to a Rockford RFX 9320 head unit, which has a dimmer wire.

I assume that the dimmer wires go together, but what is the illumination wire used for?

From reading on this forum.

12 volt.com

It would seem I should be connecting the illumination wire on the cars harness to the dimmer wire on the rockford harness.

Can anyone confirm?

Depends on the deck. Most decks will want the Dimmer wire out of the car but some, as that article showed, will want the Illumination wire. Often aftermarket decks that want Illumination color that wire yellow with black stripe and not orange/white stripe.

ummm, what? yellow/black most often is mute or attenuation wire.

Illum is orange/white and dimmer is orange, illum is usually straight 12V when the lights are turned on and dimmer varies in voltage depending on where you turn your dimmer switch.
