"But, human hearing is a lot less responsive below 50hz and the ported boxes sound flatter."

i know a little about response curves and the frequency range of the different enclosures but could you explain how you get a flatter sound from ported?
thanks

Ported has boomy bass? Maybe to boomy box builders perhaps.

Vampiregirl, a lower tuning frequency will smooth out the frequency peak compared to a higher tuning. People who do db drag usually tune their boxes high (50+Hz) because it causes a mad peak in that range, but starts to disappear when tuning around 40 or lower.

To tune a box, it's best to use a program or at least know what the sub specs are and what it recommends for dimensions of the box and port (size, length, etc) which all make difference in the tuning of the box.

^ iteresting point, but if true it begs the question:
Is it better to measure flat or to sound flat?

All civics rattle a lot, make sure that all of the plastic panels and all of the panels in the back are snapped or screwed in tight. Then use sound dampining to get rid of the rest

i think what i will do is build a sealed box so that is "sounds" flater and because i will be loosing spl (which i love) i just buy speakers 4 times more powerful like from the audiobahn eternal series

... then i dont even have to worrie about rattles because you wont be able to hear them
