Hi all,

I've been doing an install this weekend (hooking up a 4-channel amp, new speakers, doing all the wiring...), and have completed everything except fitting the 6.5" front speakers + tweeters.

I mounted the 6x9s in the rear dash; they mounted fine. But the front 6.5" speakers don't fit! I was incredibly vexed...

It's not that they're too deep, but the diameter of the hole is slightly too small. Which means that when I try to put it in, the speakers sticks out about 3/4 of a centimetre. Argh!

The speakers are Focal Access 1's, and I'm not sure what the best course of action is in this case. Would you use some kind of thick steel-wool drill bit to wear down the sides of the hole a few more millimetres? I'm thinking of doing this, but then I would probably have to lose the metal lip that extends to the inside of the car about 1 cm. I don't think that'll be a problem, but I'm not certain.

I'll also have to drill new holes to mount it, since they don't line up with the factory holes.

This is a 1996 Honda Accord EX.

Has anyone ever had a problem like this?

ya you can cut it out or i would try using an MDF mounting ring

 

You're lucky if you're only out by 3/4 centimeter.

I put in 6-1/2" in the factory mounts that had 6".

I used drills, jigsaw, holesaw, drywall saw and lots n lots of 'Amazing Goop'.
Modifeid the inside of the door panel for clearance, made the speaker mount studier than it was and dynamatted everything possible.
I've since bought a drumell tool for my next upgrade.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.......

 

Just cutout some mdf rings and you are good to go.

 

If you want the speaker to fit behind the factory grill, you have some work ahead of you. A better option may be to find a 6.5" component speaker instead of a 6.75" component speaker.

www.eclipse-web com and look at some of their component speakers. They should work just fine in this application.

 

Unfortunately I can't just return these speakers so easily, especially since I bought them from the States. Plus, I really love the way they sound. They are 6.5" on paper, except I guess in France they decided they'd make them slightly larger for fun.

I think if I make an MDF ring like others have suggested, I should be okay with space to put the factory cover on still.

You can't buy the ring already cut at home depot or somewhere, can you?

 

there are tons of venders on here (i personally suggest using) but hey if ya have to e bay has em and i do think the rings are a good idea

 

I've had the same issue, you'll have to slightly modify the speakers frame, and cut 3-4 mm off each edge that is protruding...shouldn't give you any problems during playback.

 

i woudlent suggest modifiying the speakers frame at all....



anyway if your only out by so little id just cut away a small amount of the metal and fit it in then drill new holes and screw the speaker in using some short screws

on both installs ive done myself ive needed to break out the rotory tool and drill bits
