Amp shuts off after 15 minutes of use.

I have a BOSS CE1602 1600 Watt amp and 2 12 Inch Sony XPLOD Subwoofers (4 Ohm). They sound great but after about 15 minutes of bumping the amp will shut off and stay off for a few minutes then come back on for a minute or two and then it shuts off and on like that. I am wondering if it is just over heating or if I need to connect the subs on each channel separately instead of bridging them? Subs are rated 4 Ohms, amp is also if bridged. I have read up on setting the input level, bass boost, and low pass frequency but was wondering why it is shutting off? Thanks for the help!

BOSS CE1602 1600 Watt Amplifier

Peak Power Handling:
2 ohms: 800 watts x 2 channels
Bridged @ 4 ohm: 1600 watts x 1 channel
RMS Power Handling, 4 ohm: 250 watts x 2 channels
Variable Low-Pass Filter: 35-160 Hz
Fixed High-Pass Filter: 200 Hz
Frequency Response: 9-50,000 Hz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio: > 102 dB
Channel Separation: 90 dB
Damping Factor: 125+
THD (Total Harmonic Distortion): 0.01%

You had mentioned 2 12" Sony XPLOD Subwoofers ( 4 ohms) now is this 4 ohms per driver? or by chance are these dual voice coil woofers? if so what is the impedance per coil?

Thank you for the quick reply. It is 4 Ohms per sub if I am reading correctly, this is from the specs of the model of sub: Impedance (Ohms): 4

Does this mean I should run them on separate channels to stop the overheating?

Edit: I do apologize for not knowing much about car audio, I am just wanting a little bass in my car for the drive to work and home, not looking to blow out my windows or anything, don't think my daughter would appreciate blown ear drums . I am currently reading up and learning what I can when I have the time.

Here is the best solution, you need to wire the subs so that the end result is an 8 ohm load, so that means you have to series the woofers. Then wire it to the amp as bridged mono. This will allow the least ammount of stress on the amp, especially when it is hot outside and you have the stereo cranked up. I'm not overly computer literate to be able to show you a diagram on the site so google series wiring and you do this inside of the box. The end result you'll only have a positive lead and a negative lead going to your amp.

I connected each sub to it's own channel before I headed home from work, drove home (about a 25 minute drive) and it never shut off. I found a diagram that shows me how to do the series wiring and will give that a shot, there isn't enough bass for my liking with them on their own separate channel. Thank you very much!

Tha'ts because you are running them in stereo, bass is meant to run in mono. Wire it how I explained and you should be fine.

Just a quick question for you, thanks a gain for the help. Instead of unscrewing the speakers from the box, would it be OK to just run the speaker wire from the negative of one to the positive of the other, I see no difference except for a few more inches of speaker wire being used, unless I am missing something.

I agree, probably too low of a load on the amplifier, heavy load on the vehicle's charging system and battery.

Nothing wrong with that^^ connection, works exactly the same.

I'd also load test the battery, the amplifier may be "motor-boating" if it's not getting enough voltage.

For sure you can wire it on the outside of the box at the speaker terminals.
