you can mke a 5 1/4 fit just make a new plate
but remove the part where the speakers are and see what you have in there ,if you can get a 6 1/2 in there you will be happyer at the end

Couldn't have said it better myself. 6 1/2 will be alot better, and you have many good choices to choose from. If your good making things yourself, you can fab up a plate outta mdf.

The amp kits at walmart are kinda junkie. I think all they have is 8 gauge. What kind of amps do you plan on running?

For speaker wire 12-16 gauge should be fine. The amp gauge depends on what you want to power and how long your cable will run...you will also want to have the right fuse for your equipment.

You can install good 5x7" speakers and have incredible sound from them over a crappy 6.5" speaker any day of the week. Alternatively you can install a abs mounting template (so that it does not deteriorate and warp like mdf does) in the door and mount up to a 6.75" speaker in the factory location.
