Installing an amp, fuses blowing!
Ok, so I'm trying to get my amp installed. Its a KenWood KAC-7201. I wanted to just test it out before ripping the car apart to get the wiring in.
So, first I ran the remot cable back and hooked it up, then connected the positive to the battery. Then I went to ground it to the frame and I get a crapload of sparks everywhere. Both 30 amp fuses on the amplifier where blown.
I have a 60 amp fuse on the positive line from the battery and its fine. So whats going wrong, I'm assuming this should work without the rca/audio cables hooked up. Everything on the amp is turned to the lowest setting.
I'm going out to get some more minifuses for the amplifier but it would be nice if I could get some input on things to try. I'm not the most knowledgable when it comes to screwing with electricity so...

For the ground, it is bare metal, you have ground away the paint? I would hook up the ground first, then RCA's, remote, and hook up the power last(and make sure that the fuse up by the battery is not in). For the last step, I would put the fuse in. If it blows, I would double check all of your wiring, and make sure that the power wire is not pinched or shorted out anywhere. I would also try putting in a 50 amp fuse by the battery.

You said while hooking up the ground you saw sparks???? am i correct? If so, your first problem, should be to ask yourself why your battery is still providing current while it's supposed to be unhooked when installing new equipment!
So could that wreck the amp? The first time I did have the battery connected. But after that I tried by disconnecting the battery. But the same thing happens, when I reconnect the battery I get sparks of the battery resulting in the amp fuses being blown again.
I tried jeepbeats suggestion, including the 50A fuse, the result there is when I connect my fuse and the circuit completes I get sparks coming of the fuse where the line makes contact. The on line fuse still doesn't blow, but the two on the amp still do
I've also checked all my wiring, all of its perfect, brand new wire, no way its causing a short.
So, hopefully I didn't mess anything up by connecting while the battery was still on. But I wouldn't think that could do any damage. Anyway, unless someone else has a suggestion I'll head in to the dealer and see what they say.
One more question though. Does it really make a difference if I connect everything to the amp before powering it? Jeep suggested connecting everything, then the power, just wondering if you could connect only the power?

do you ahve the amp on while hooking it up? The guy that did mine got one hell of a shock, i guess he had he amps power switch on or something, i don't really know, all i know is i put in a cd, and it blows the pants off me
No, the amp doesn't have a power switch, just a remote line to the Head Unit.
I took it to the dealer and it turns out its a bad amp. So they replaced it and now I've got a new amp. Everything else on the install seems to have went smoothly. I haven't overly tested the system yet but I know it works. I'll play with it a little after work tommorrow.
Thanks for all the replies!
