Need help, sound system does not wrk...

Well i took out my subs to drive back home for Thanksgiving... when i came back to school to put the subs back in they wouldn't work.

I checked to see how much power was being sent into the amp and when my car was on it said about 6V however when my car was off there was 12V. is that right? 6V to power an amp?? plus there was barely any power being put out threw the speaker wires, less than 1V. Amp lights up and everything, the wire were restriped to make sure there was a clean connection and ground. It's only a 200watt RMS amp as well.

I brought my battery to CT to check if my battery was dieing but apprenlty it was alright. I looked at the sheet they gave me and it said Voltage Under Load was 10.53 doesn't that seem a little low though? The guy at CT said it was normal.

Also tried the subs in my buddies car so the subs do work.

So i can't think of anythign else... is my Amp done for?

Is your alt dead? the only reason I can see for a voltage drop WHILE running is a dead alt. it shouldnt go from 12 off to 6 running, check the voltage across the battery with the car on should read somewhere between 13.8 - 14.5

Sounds to me like you have a bad connection, possibly corrosion or rust or just a bad connection. Start by checking ALL power/grounds/terminals/solder joints etc and make sure they are clean and tight.

simple question... did you tape up the end of your power wire before you left? sounds like you may have shorted it out and blown a fuse somewhere (I'm trusting that you're intelligent enough to use fuses)

Thanks for the replies!

I left the power cables connected to the amp... but i did not tape the speaker wire ends up... would that fry my amp?? I did use fuses.. and they were checked to amke sure i didn't blow a fuse...

I already checked the connections so it can't be that either....

I doubt it's my alternator because my car runs perfectly fine... never needed a boost yet....
