If you pull out the RCA's, put them back in and it works for a bit but then it stops, might have something to do with the RCA's. Does it work every single time you pull them out and put them back in?

there is no way to check if the tinsel is touching unless you remove the sub and if you take the rca's out and put them back in ya you are gonna here noise coming from the sub its just the rca's making the connection...best bet is to take the sub out check the connections and wiring on the back of the sub then trace your rca's make sure there not pinched anywhere and recheck all of your connections until you find the problem...

While the system is supposed to be making music do a wiggly-jiggly on every wire connection HU to RCA, RCA to amp, Amp to speaker wire, speaker wire to sub box, sub box to speaker ANY of these could be the problem (this IS the problem you want to have BTW it is the cheapest to fix by tightening a connection or replacing wire everything else involves $)

1- take a portable CD player/ Walkman with a headphone to RCA plug and plug it into the amp. If the system works flawlessly then it is the HU/ RCA with issues (my guess) BUT if the system still has the same issues it is the amp/ speaker wire/ sub

2 -if it is the HU/ RCA plug the portable CD into the RCA at the HU ... if it works fine the HU is the problem, but if the problem is the same it is the RCA (my guess)

3- if it is the AMP/ speaker wire/ or sub ... swap out components till the problem goes away

is it a dvc sub and what amp are you running and how do you have the sub wired to the amp if it's a dvc?
amp's will shut down if the impedance is dropped too low for the amp by parralleling voicecoils on subs

let me know

It almost sounds like a capacitor going bad in the AMP and is having trouble staying charged and/or discharging.

I would agree with Mr. Vroom's suggestions and narrow down the culprit. It could be a few things and the easiest way you're gonna find it is by process of elimination.

I replaced all the rca connections. I am able to get the sub going by turning the music up about 3/4 volume. Then the subwoofer seems to stay on, but it still tends to give out at louder volumes that I know the sub is capable of handling. I am going to do some of the testing with the rca input on the deck and amp later today, but I don't think the amp is the problem.
