I'm with DUKK on this one; get yourself a mono amp for any subs you might want to power. If you need more than a couple hundred watts make sure its a class D (Digital) not A/B.
I'd keep looking, or save for something new which would fit the bill. For $400, that gear is overpriced. Plus, you just never know how someone treated a sub...

For $200 you can get a new decent 10" in a prefab vented box.

A 4ch amp is an alright idea if you are short on room, plus it gives you upgrade opportunities. If you like the sound and volume of the front end already though, just look for a mono sub amp. You should be able to grab 500+ ClassD watts for $200 or less if used. Check out the classifieds here - can be some nice deals in there.

Nz$200 won't get you far buying new over here. I can get infinity kappa 10" sub for $250 and budget level boxes start at $50
I actually thought the Boston acoustics pro sub looked like he had taken care of it, good housing too. I can't buy a speaker that quality here for 200 . I only have reviews of others to go off to be fair though.
I'm keeping my eyes out for a mono amp small enough to go under the passenger seat ( d class digital and about 500w) .

Had no idea where you were from. Thanks for hanging on our board

If the sub looks alright and you can hear it play and it plays alright, then it might be a decent deal. I too don't like to look at used subs but it's not always bad.

I checked out the Boston sub and it was mint so I grabbed it. Still hunting for the right amp for it.

In thE meantime The shop where I bought the alpine 121e has agreed to let me return it in trade for a better hu with more pre outs! I will be paying the difference.

Basically I can choose between a 123e or a 117e. I mainly play CDs and want the best sq I can get.
Any advice on which I should buy, I am leaning towards the 117e (extra $100 than the 123e) my only concern is whether it will be practical to use without forking out for the imprint as well?

If you can swing it, I would get the 117e. It has a better built in EQ and built in time alignment as well as more pre-out power.

I was going to the shop this afternoon to trade the cda121 for a cda117

The thing is this morning a hu came up on the local trade site. It's an eclipse cd8061 !

Its manufacture date is 2001 but the thing is like its brand new in the box , the guy used it for a year in competitions then stored it in a dehumidified cabinet.
He told me it was one of the last ones made in japan. He says he tested it and it's sweet.
For nz$300 I just had to score it. Can't wait to try it out.

It's going to cost me near $300 to upgrade my alpine to the 117 and trading for the 121.
alpine 117 vs eclipse eclipse 8061
Is the alpine 117 going to compare to the eclipse? I'm thinking maybe I should just sell the 121 online for what I can get and be done with it.
Or am I just a guy with little knowlede (can be dangerous) getting all carried away with vintage gear nostalgia

The eclipse hu sounds much better than the entry level alpine, no surprises there.
I don't know whether it's the 8 volt preamp output from the head but I can get so much power out of the little Sony amp that I can't turn the gains up much at all.
Anyway next I need to amplify the 10" Boston pro sub ,I have heard these need lots of watts to drive, but the specs say between 50 and 1100 watts, that's a big range.
The speaker is 4 ohm

My options from what I can get locally

$30 Rf transana punch 60x2 bridged at 4 ohm 120wattsrms
Cheapest option but maybe not enough power

$130 ppi pc4400 bridged x2 200rms ,
I could run my front components off the other two channels , enough power for the sub?

$220 Jvc arsenal 8001d mono d class. 700wrms at 4 ohmx1.
Tiny footprint lots of power seems to good to be true

$350 rainbow ipaul dm2000 mono d class. 360rms at 4 ohmx1
Better brand reputation than the jvc, is 360 w going to be enough?

On the face of it the jvc would be the way to go, what I don't understand is how the Rainbow Ipaul is twice the footprint and half the rms of the jvc?
They are both d class mono block of similar vintage, makes me wonder about the quality and how real the specs are for the Jvc

Which amp should I go for , anybody?

Just pulled the sub out the box and it's a 10.4 lf not a 10.5lf after all.
10.4lf is 500w max and 250watts continous .
Looks like I will be going for the ppi pc4400 and bridge two channels for 200w rms for the sub
Or the ipaul dm2000 mono at 360 watts rms and upgrade the 2 channel amp for the front components

I grabbed the pc4400 before someone else did, tried it out and all the channels are working fine.
What a great amp! The sound on the front components is definitely improved.
It has a setting for high voltage inputs 4-10v , which is perfect for the eclipse head deck.
You can adjust the high pass frequency so I was able to tweak and offset the nasty highs off the infinity Kappa tweeters.
I tried the Boston sub and it sounded like ***. Measured the box volume and it seemed ok (1 cubic foot approx) on inspection noticed it hadn't been sealed and a couple of the speaker mount holes were stripped so I have applied sealant to the joins.
Will leave a couple of days to cure , make a rubber gasket for the speaker, re screw it to the box and try again
