Here's a pic of the trunk with cargo net I made. I still want / need to find some descent sub grills that don't look hideous.


I really didn't take as many pics as I should've, I realised this as I was going through them. This idea behind the install was to modify as little of the car as possible and maintain as much practicality as possible.

Comments / criticism are more than welcome, let me know what you think.

Looks good, I would just try and find a better looking place for the distribution block. But it looks like you wont be able to see it anyway.

Have you tried different orientations for the subs to see what sounds best? Having two smaller boxes would make it easier to move them around. Try them facing each other at the back and stuff?

 

carfull with that pg amp mounted like that.
I put one in a guys car and the trunk sealed so good that some of the solder on the board melted and shorted out the amp.

Ya, you can't see the dist block at all. It's only about 3 inches off of the trunk floor on the back seat and the sub box completely blocks it.

Those boxes are not any regular shape. There is the front cube which you see built into a larger cube at the back which also has a slanted back on it. They are built to take up as little trunk space as possible while maintaining the functionality of the rear seat passthrough in the middle of the back bench. The design wraps the boxes around the contours of the trunk and fits them right against the back seat. I can take another couple of pics later to show what I mean. Having 2 boxes also gave me the ability to easily take 1 out but keep the other for some bass if I needed the trunk space. If I take out one sub box I can fit my mom's wheelchair in there without a struggle. The left box is perminantly anchored, the right sub is removabe. I stapled large velcro strips to the bottom of the box to hold it in place. Its a little ghetto but makes it easy to take out and works surprisingly well.

The amp is class D. it remains surprisingly cool even after hours of operation at a descent volume level. The Alpine gets much warmer to the touch with the same use. I just make sure to leave a few inces of breathing room when packing the trunk with stuff. I figured the amps would get better ventilation there than stuffed behind the boxes.

Thanks Wayne, lol that really is the most important part. The system isn't kick you in the face loud, but I didn't want it to be like that (will I did a little lol)

The difference that the 4 ch made is HUGE! Nice and clear, crisp with midbass kicks like I've never had in my car before. I had no idea how "noisy" the deck amp was at higher volume levels until I turned it up with the 4ch.

I can't even really hear the rear speakers from up front, but the passengers that I've had back there have told me it "sounds sick". Take that for what its worth. It actually seems as though there is more of a midbass kick is in the rear doors than the front, but I don't mind because from the front it doesn't sound like most of the midbass is coming from behind me, I can just hear it.

I would like to actually relocate the tweeters for the front components closer to the driver, flush mounted in the door. They are currently in the stock location within the door sails. I didn't do so initially because I wanted it to look stealth and I didn't want to hack up my door panel. They sound fine where they are, I just turned the treble down 1 notch on the eq to calm them down a bit.

Bass wise... It'll do until next year lol. It's not super loud, but its certainly loud enough. It will not shatter any windows but it is tight and clean, leaning more towards SQ than volume which is what I wanted. It took a lot of playing around with eqs, crossovers and bass boost on the amp to get it to sound right with rock type music, but I'm pretty dam close now.

I haven't stopped playing with it yet, but just last night I got it to a point where I am happy with it (for the time being anyways )

In all honestly I'm afraid to touch anything right now because I don't want to make it sound worse as right now I am happier with the sound than I have been yet.

It's the best that I could do with the $$$ I had availible and I think I did pretty well. Total $$ spent on the system (minus the deck as I had it from my previous car) is about $1020 including wiring and taxes. Everything was new except for the deck and the subs. I guess it helps to have connections lol.

All I keep in the car are CD copies, the SQ is noticeably better with the originals. My next step will be upgrading my HU, something with a 24 bit DA converter and internal amp delete. Unfortunately unless someone wants to trade I can't do anything else until school's done... at least its my last year.

It's my daily driver, I care a little about what it looks like too lol.
