Plastic cover over Sub magnet?

My Kickers came with a big plastic/rubber thingy over the magnet. I'm wondering if it serves any purpose? It looks to me like its just for show.
I'd rather not take up any more airspace in the box than really necesary.
Can I take them off?

If they are like what I have seen on some of my subs, then yes you can take them off. The bigger question IMO is really, how much more airspace do you think doing this will yield?

They are just cosmetics.

Cosmetics, maybe, but I think they might serve a slight protection purpose as well. If you accidently bang your magnet while moving the sub around, it can protect it against chipping.
