DIN refers to the openeing size for the headunit. A single DIN opening is about 2" x 7", a double DIN is about 4" x 7". If the dash opening is double and you are installing a single DIN unit, like most units that don't have the 6" or 7" screens, usually the install kit will come with a pocket or "cubby hole" to fill in the extra space.

As far as wiring kit, for '96, I THINK that you are OK with just a regular wiring adapter with or without the factory BOSE system.
I believe it was a couple of years later they eliminated the accessory power wire then in 04, they put the radio on the CANBUS system. These newer vehicles need a $100+ adapter but you should be OK with the 96.

Don't forget the tool to pull the factory radio (unless the 96 is different than the newer Jettas), it's not the same as the "U-shaped" ones at Walmart for pulling Ford radios, etc.

Best of luck with your install.

Actually my radio was changed by VW to a 6 cd changer and all mine is, is 4 screws. You pop off a few panels around it and then there are the screws. I believe it will be easy from here now that I know all this.

I will take pics of the process for people that have no clue what they are doing.

Thanks a lot guys.

well harness should be a metra 70-1784 and ant adapter is a 40vw10
u saying u have a 6 disc indash? in a 1996 jetta? or am i misunderstanding something here
this range only has a din opening meaning no way is a double din gonna fit unless you customize the dash and remove the vent... its been done.. but it is a bit of work... got a picture?

6 CD Changer in the trunk sorry. Not the dash I forgot they made those.

And I never buy a real fancy CD player anyways. But on the Best Buy website it says soemthing and then for the answer it says "DIN". Im guessing that means single DIN? And not double DIN? I am looking at an Alpine CD Player for my head unit. Altho I wont be buying it for awhile.

Oh and I found out what Double DIN is now. And I wont be buying anything that big for it. I just like the smaller cd players.
