I'm not planning on racing, but I want to do some drifting. My drift tires should arrive any day now. As a kid a had a Tyco Turbo Hopper and I loved racing it with friends. I always wanted to move up to the real stuff but never could afford it. Then when a CanAM RC race came to the Welland Seaway mall I went with my kids to check it out. I was loving it, and my son was impressed too. So I bought the car and I'm teaching my son how to drive it responsibly. He's 6 and doing pretty good . . . I'm also glad that Tamiya has a "beginner mode" which reduces the the top speed by about 40% - the car is way too fast for him to handle in full mode. I let him try it once, he opened it up to full throttle, slid it around a corner, almost slammed it into a curb then stopped it. His hands were shaking as he handed it back to me saying "here, it's too fast for me. I want to watch you drive it now." He knows his limits well . . . I've read great reviews on the TT-01 chassis. Most say it's a great beginner chassis because it's as tough as nails and easily upgradable, so a great car for a 6 year old to learn with.

So what kind of stuff do you have? I've been considering buying another car so my son and I can drive together . . . I just can't justify the cost to my wife What brand of car were you running? On road? Off road? Truck? Fun stuff though.

It's fun playing around with all of this stuff . . . I've come to the conclusion that as long as I don't aim for perfection, but just have fun in the process of building and tweaking, it's a blast! When I start aiming for perfection is when I want to spend money I don't have.

I'm currently bi-amping my components off my HU . . . front is tweeters, rear is mids. It's not bad for just a head unit. I would say the tweeters don't need more than head unit power. But the mids definitely need more to really sing.

I checked my favourite e-bayer (he lists new stuff every Tuesday) no new car audio this week. Last time he had a lot of AS-IS subs they went for a high price, so I'm thinking that my secret might be too well known now, and I might not be able to continue with this racket

I assume you have caps protecting the tweeters.........I stumbled across a couple of pieces this summer that will do the trick for you....they were pretty cheap and I'm dying to get them hooked up somewhere......

Some of my thoughts on the subs that came across my bench in this . . .

Pioneer TS-W257D4 was a disappointment. I have been a Pioneer fan for awhile, so I think I was expecting more from it. It was sloppy in a ported box, and didn't have much bottom end in a sealed box. I used to think that Pioneer offered better quality for the same price point . . . but now I don't think that Pioneer's quality is any better than the competition.

RF P115S8 Was nothing special . . . but given that it is a bottom of the barrel 15" it wasn't bad. I would have expected more bottom end from a 15", but it is their entry level sub.

MTX 512 was pretty similar to the Pioneer. OK in a sealed box - good punch, not so good rumble. I haven't thought much of MTX's entry level stuff in the past, so this was par for the course in my opinion.

RF P210D4 was a nice sub. It worked well in both sealed and ported (although I preferred the ported). Given that at one point Future shop was selling these at the same price point as the Pioneer TS-W257D4, I was surprised. I think the RF is level above the Pioneer.

MTX 510 Great sounding sub, great power handling and worked well in both sealed and ported. I really liked this sub and fed it lots of power.

My preference from all of this, given each subs MSRP, the improvement in sound quality from the RF P210D4 to the MTX 510 wasn't that noticeable. So I would take the RF over the MTX. Only draw back is power handling . . . but then I could get 2 RFs for close to the same price as one MTX.

 

I'm running the comps through the cross-overs still. The crossovers have independent inputs for mid and tweeter, so they are bi-amp friendly. I'm running them accordingly . . . hmm, now that I think about it, I by-pass the X-over for the mids and see if that gets me the upper mid range I've been missing . . .

What exactly are the pieces that you are talking about?
I'm hoping you're not talking about some Pyramid or Legacy stuff (I'm done with those days)

 

Nope, I don't even have any Kraco left....I did find an old MEI booster amp in my garage the other day tho......

It's all decent stuff, it just needs a home. After I get it back I'll toss a couple ideas and model numbers at you....
