what kind of wire should i be using for my speakers.

what kind of wire should i be using for my speakers.

just wondering if someone could give me some guidlines as when it is pracitical and useful to use:

18awg wire
16awg wire
12awg wire
08awg wire.

for speakers. not sub(s)

It's ALWAYS better to run lower gauge wire....less signal loss especially over longer distances. Practicality is another issue. It's not always practical to run a wire the width of your thumb inside your dash up to your HU....keeping in mind that usually you will have between 2 and 5 of these depending on your setup.

This is generally speaking. It applies to any wire carrying a signal be it speaker wire or RCAs direct to the HU. Gauge is one thing but not all wire is created equal either. Check on shielding properties as well.

16 will no problem handle 200-300Wrms all a full car length. If you are feeling unsure use 12

I would us 4 runs of 18 gauge for speakers, Always worked for me

16 gauge,4 ohm's,20 ft max / 8 ohm's 40 ft max.

14 gauge,4 ohm's,35 ft max / 8 ohm's 75 ft max.

12 gauge,4 ohm's,50 ft max / 8 ohm's 100 ft max.
