here is another "aaron-like drama story" to add to the archives...

* please excuse length *

ok, so today started off pretty well...i got up, enjoyed my breakfast, got my stuff ready, had my shower and got dressed, and headed for what was looking to be a productive and sunny day.

i got 1 errand done, and i was heading north on Mac. Tr. turning onto Canyon Meadows Drive East, so that i could get onto Deerfoot (i was actually going to an autobody shop to get an estimate done on my front end...i wanted to customize it a little this summer....)

anyway, i'm coming up the off ramp, with this lady in front of me driving a 1991 rusted white nissan. we were both doing the speed limit, and were coming into the merge lane. when all of a sudden, right at the begin of the merge lane she slams on her breaks! this was right at the beginning of the merge...she had at least 200ft before the lane ended! obviously, i didn't have time to stop, i hit my brakes and managed to slow a bit, but still rear ended the lady pretty good.

first thing she says upon getting out of the car "my neck, my neck" and i'm thinking "oh great - one of those kind". so we exchange info, and stuff, she seemed to not be that concerned about her car, but it was probably because she that TECHNICALLY i was at fault even though she stopped in the middle of the road!

looking at her car, there is a small dent in the bumper, and the lic. plate was bashed up pretty good... looking at my car...
- dented euro plate and cover
- crumpled hood
- broken/smashed headlight
- broken front grill
- damaged radiator
- damaged passenger side front quarter panel
- smashed front bumper
- broken hood release

all of this, PLUS, since the hood release is broken, i can't even get the hood up to see under it, so i don't know the extent of the damage.

so as you can imagine, what started off as a nice day, turned into a really bad one...everything was going so good in my life with the car - plans for this summer were going along smoothly and i was getting ready for shows and stuff - then something like this has to come along and throw my whole life out of whack. not to mention, the 3X show at the end of the month might have to be compromised...i will be there, but might not have much to compete with.

the cost to fix everything will probably destroy all my plans for "extras" on my car this summer. and i don't know what's gonna happen with the other lady. she could be really "difficult" with the whole thing as well.

for now, looks like all i can do is wait until she gets back to me and we discuss things. plus, i gotta start looking around for estimates. man! i hate people who can't use merge lanes properly!!!

sorry, just had to get that all off my chest...it's gonna be a long greuling road ahead until i get all this straightened out! looks like coffeyman is going to be coffeygrump for the next little while...

Not good man, sorry to hear that. Too bad she had to wreck your badass hood. :( Hope you can make the triple, even if you are in my class it'd be nice to see you out. Glad you're ok man.

Brandon 05-02-2005 04:22 PM

that sucks man, I went through the same type of deal last week. I feel for you man, I really do there's nothing worse than wrecking your ride no matter what kind of vehicle it is.

Blinddemonz 05-02-2005 04:25 PM

I hate when people do that they do it all the time here down the street from me and it causes a lot of accidents. I don't understand why people instantly decide its a stop sign instead of a yield

That really sucks man, was she old ?

Cavalier Chunk 05-02-2005 04:47 PM

man stuff like that stinks, i hope she's at fault considering she stopped in the middle of the road.

ya last summer like 1 week after i got my car this crossed eyed lady backed right into me and wrecked my rear passenger door. and i had only had the car for one week, that so peeved me off. forthe rest of the summer i drove around with a banged up door. she never even had a scatch to her truck and then my door on the other hand it was right messed.

Logan Lundy 05-02-2005 05:58 PM

Boooooruns man!!!!

I got a cold sore today...i dunno how but it sucks too.

GrizZz 05-02-2005 07:00 PM

Dude that bites. I feel for ya.

But standing on the other side of the fence (my wife was the "rear-end-ee" in an accident in February), since the lady you hit got out proclaiming "my neck, my neck!", I'd advise you to contact a lawyer, fast. She's obviously ready for a fight, or looking for one.

It's also gonna really, really suck that you had no witnesses, photos, or police. With none of those to back you up, the law is probably gonna look at the black & white of it, you "following too close".

GrizZzled 05-02-2005 07:35 PM

Hey, it's me, Rae. Mrs. GrizZz. Sorry to hear about the accident, crap like that sucks. Like Bob says, careful of this chick, if she came outta there saying "my neck" then there's a good chance she knows that the insurance companies will jump on that in order to get her some coin.
My neck and back are screwed but I didn't feel too much of anything after my accident, and whiplash doesn't set in until 24 - 48 hours after the injury. Good luck!! Hopefully they find her in the wrong instead of blaming you.

Cavalier Chunk 05-02-2005 07:53 PM

hey it's mrs. grizzz. welcome to the board. i'm chunk

Fr0z3N 05-02-2005 08:09 PM

I don't even drive and I can't ****ing stand people who can't merge.

Thumper89 05-02-2005 08:34 PM

Even though I'm not too keen on the opening of your story.."Aaron-like drama"...I'm sorry to hear about that...

I know how much pride you take in your car...pretty well as much as I do mine...And when some dumbass decides to stop using their common sense like that and causes damage to it, man..Pisses me off no end!!

Even though I bug ya on here, I too hope to see ya at the 3x show competing ...the more the merrier!!And BTW,Dusty...When did I ever tell anyone that you bite??

BTW..Was the hood that badass one with all the airbrushing on it??Hope not...

I sell general insurance in Alberta. I don't mean to alarm you, but this scam is well known to people working in the industry (and I mean EXACTLY what you described), particularly in Calgary. I suggest you contact your insurance broker and file a police report ASAP and let them know your concerns and what is going on. This lady will almost certainly be going for medical benefits. One thing that may help is the Alberta government just put a cap on soft tissue injuries at $4,000. I hope things work out for you!

thankfully i hadn't changed over to the new hood yet, that was going to be later on this week. and i actually just bought new headlights which were gonna go on this week too, so i'm glad i was a little late in installing them.

as you can see in the last two pics from the glass and debris on the road, it happened right at the beginning of the merge, when the lady slammed on her brakes. i hate people who can't merge!!!

so anyway, she phoned tonight and said that her "repairs" are going to be $650 for the scratch in her bumper of the 91 nissan, and she's going to see her fam. Doc in the morning...i dunno. i'm pissed.

Thats the number one reason I do not like highway driving. On ramps while someone else is trying to merge with you is absolutely insane. Once I'm on the highway I'm fine, its getting on that I don't like.

Coffey - I see by your pictures where exactly she stopped thats insane, people like that should not have a license.

isn't it illegal to stop in a highway merge lane?

I know that hindsight is 20/20... but from your pics I see a low curb and a soft shoulder.

Instead of hitting the lady why not just swerve around her?

It's always better to try and swerve around someone rather than jam the brakes in hopes of not hitting them.

But you probably already know that NOW :D

this was my first thought about the whole thing as well. anyways, dustin, depending on the shop you take it too,,to get fixed, assuming you're going thru insurance,,,you can sweet talk them into paying a little extra out of your pocket and get your customizing done while the car is already apart,, which could save you a little money. in alot of cases custom peices like bumpers and grilles are cheaper than OEM pieces. it's worth a shot, i know alot of shops will go for it.

Haunz 05-03-2005 07:28 AM

Damn man.. you were scammed hardcore...

The moral is always try to keep your distance !

You should have jumped out, dummied the bitch.. then took off... Either that, or since this was obvioulsy a scam and there were no witnesses... call the cops... tell em this bitch locked em up so you would hit her, but you didn't... then she proceeded forward, through it in reverse, and banged into you...

they may or may not belive you..

I do stuff I shouldn't do when people won't move for me when I get on the 401.

If I'm going on the 401 from the ramp and someone just sits there when there's plenty of room to move, I'll start merging into his/her lane, it's especially fun when you're a bit ahead of them because then you can see their face as you start to merge at their car. lol.

No, it's not smart but it's funny as hell and no-one's gonna get hurt. The one finger salute always makes ya feel better too.

I don't believe it's illegal to stop on an on-ramp.

I mean, what do you do if it's bumper to bumper and you can't merge?

There's no way the lady is getting in trouble for not mergring.

ANY time you rear-end someone, it's your fault.

Logan Lundy 05-03-2005 09:25 PM

I believe in the great province of Alberta if you hit someone from behind its 100% your fault no matter what..... care to correct me if im wrong Lando?

</font>
Ya cept I always fear running out of time or not having enough time when merging onto the highway man lol SO when someones crawling infront of me it pisses me off because I can't fully accelerate before I get on, I won't hesitate to merge before them but my point is I hate it it screws me up lol

thanks for all the tips guys...

i still haven't heard from the female dog, and what her doctor said...

but luckily i've got some friends who work in an autobody & paint shop who felt really bad and said if i bought the parts and paint, they would charge practically nothing for labour, so according to the "estimate" damage is under $1000 = i don't have to have a damage sticker = i don't have to file a police report = i don't get a ticket for "wreckless driving" or "following to close" = i get no points on my record.

things went a little better today...but the road to financial freedom is still a long one ahead...
just like that funny lingering aftertaste that you get in your mouth, this one will be in my bank account for a long time...

You need a bit of the merge lane to be able to gain speed and merge in with the flow of traffic.

If you're stopped at the very end you're essentially forcing yourself to stomp on it to try and squeeze in.

If you wait until the very end of the merge lane to stop and take a look you've basically screwed yourself.

Actually, anytime someone is hurt in an accident regardless of damages you are supposed to file a police report. If she filed a police report and had your insurance information or license # etc. they will find you eventually (you can take that chance though). And yes, any time you rear end a vehicle you are automatically at fault (unless the vehicle you rear ended was backing up
