Hey All,

I am considering (when my financial fortune takes an upturn,as usual) buying a winch for my blazer.

Anybody know a rough 'good' price range that say a winch that can pull around 3000-4000 lbs would be??

The only place I have even found that sells these in the GTA is National 4wd in burlington, and while they seem really great, I was just curious, and second opinions never hurt.

Also, WARN is basically the best brand? Or is something like a Superwinch just as good.

This would be, honestly, mainly a decorative winch, I plan to do only minimal amounts of off-roading, when possible, like camping, etc, and figured it looks cool, so why not.

BTW, the truck weighs 5500 lbs, so i figure a 'self rescue' sort of winch, I would need around 75% of that weight? Proper logic?

I would say if your only planning on it being "decorative", save your money and put it into a lift kit, or power upgrades. A lift with new rubber will give way more in the way of an apperance upgrade, plus it will actually enhance performance when you do take it off road. If your not planning on off roading it that much, a lift and rubber will be much better investment IMO. If a lift isn't your cup of tea, why not look at a power chip? It will give you a much more controlled power range for your vehicle. Anyway, a winch is a pretty spendy "hood orniment".

if you wanna try the cheap way out look for a big "come-a-long" (hand winch).

as for the winch size - best thing would be to ask on a off road forum, i have sen pics of atv winch`s lifting a bike up a wall. i think in most cases its better to over size one then to under size it

a realy good i dea is to always have a lenght of rope/cable in the truck as well - your winch cable WILL ALWAYS BE ABOUT A FOOT SHORT - been there done that :D

If it is purely decorative then your fine with a small winch. A litle bigger winch would be a 6000 pound and use a snatch block to double the pulling power but lower the line speed.

A rule of thumb is a winch rated for twice the vehicles weight, so you would be looking at a Warn M10,000 which is big bucks and they have major current draw.

you could go with a hydraulic winch . It uses the power steering pump for the pressure, but if you drown the motor you out of luck.

I paid $600 for my used Warn Xd9000i. It included the remote, the roller fairlead and the cable. Spent another $300 on the mount and the winch plate.

Warn has Excellent customer service. Never ever had any problems with these people, all questions were answered really fast.

when I talked to warn they said to get a winch 1 1/2 times my trucks gvwr rating

if you get a 4500lb winch for your 5500;b truck you'll burn it out fairly quick

check out milemarker for winches as well as warn

I was going to post but I misread the name of the topic, this is about winches!

Look a winch is there to save your butt, nobody tries to get stuck of hung up. If you arent with a bunch of folks who can pull your stuck ride out for you then you could have a long cold walk in your future. If you need a winch spend the bucks and get a good one. If you buy a toy winch real off roaders will laugh and point.
