Calgary Older guy ... But Young at Heart

Hello,

Older guy in Calgary who knows almost nothing about car audio...

I am in the process of adding some upgraded audio to my 2 door '02 Explorer Sport. Back in the day q-Logic - and at least one other company - made custom enclosures for Explorers. I have one - for a 10" sub with a max mounting depth of 5 3/8 I think , and a volume of .65 cuft.

So I joined here to try and learn what this alphabet soup is all about. I won't be competing or anything but I will be trying to do my own install - including a double DIN navigation unit and the Q-logic box for the sub.

I don't want to spend much and I think I have pretty keen eye for decent used stuff at a decent price.

This is probably not the place to get into details but I am looking for a decent 10" sub - maybe something like a used JL Audio 10W1V2-4 - which looks like it will work quite nicely with my custom enclosure. Amps confuse me lol but I will probably try to find a decent 1 channel at about 200 watts RMS to power it.

I don't think I will add an amp for the main speakers - the previous owner changed some stuff and though I don't know for sure, it looks like the wiring required for the sub and amp are already installed. I think it is 4 or 8 AWG yellow stuff that goes all the way to the battery so that looks like a good place to start. I think they upgraded the 4 main speakers as well and they sound pretty good to me.

So don't be too hard on me if I ask some stupid questions - gotta learn somehow and asking questions is a pretty good way.

I look forward to the site and deciphering the alphabet soup :)

If anyone has done an explorer - 2 or 4 door -drop me a line.

10WX's are on sale at Visions for $48 right now, good start for a basic system and cheap....not to mention, better than buying a used subwoofer that you have no clue about and how bad it has been abused.

Thanks Allan - I will look into those.

For that price, I am considering picking up 4 to play with, as the reviews are pretty possitive for what they are.

Thanks Allan74 - I picked one up today.

It looks to be a really good fit for my enclosure and budget.

I've had a few customers burn the tinsel leads on the WX's more than a few times. That's probably the only downfall to those subs.

So here is a newb question...

I took a look at the new sub and can't find the +/- markings on the terminals...

It's not shown on the "owners guide" either.

Is there something I am missing ?

Also, any thoughts on what would be a decent amp to power one of these ? It looks to me like something at 150w RMS @ 4 OHMS would be about right.

Thoughts/comments are welcome.

Thanks

Polarity markings might be stamped into the frame around the terminals somewhere or even just a dot of red paint on the positive.

Any decent 2channel amp rated around 35-50W/channel will do just fine bridged into 1 channel for your sub....

Thanks for the input BigRed guy. I checked all over the 10WX and no markings. Did some googling and found a small battery "trick" - will give that a try.

It took some work but I was able to shoehorn the Q-Logic box into my Explorer Sport - had to dremel out the storage pocket lip - but it did fit. A little creative wire routing and I will be almost done and can button up the that rear panel.

As for an AMP I picked up a used Jensen JP260, 300 watts X 2 & 180 X 1 bridged I think - do you think that will be 2 much ? I suppose I can keep the gain way down. :stroke: I could always re-sell it I suppose and get something smaller/more appropriate.

I haven't installed it yet though so I will look around. A physically smaller amp would be nice as I am trying to keep everything hidden.

Thanks
