Key stuck in ignition GM

Well, what more can i say. In my 01 grand prix se my key has been sticking in the ignition lately by sticking i mean it will not turn all the way back for me to remove the key it just... stops. Usually i give it 20 seconds I hear a "Click" from inside the steering colum and bam i can turn my key all the way and remove it, today i got off work 6am and it has been stuck and is still stuck to this moment 3 hours of turning on and off the car over and over I'm sure this is not good for the engine/tranny has anyone had expirence with this? I'v tried removing the rubber stopper and poking inside with a little screw driver but still no dice.

I hear it may be a sensor in the shifter thats not telling my ignition that my transmission is in park and thinks its still in drive and won't release the key....

If you've got a bad sensor the engine light should pop on. I advise to have the key cylinder removed by a professional and they can clean and re-coat the internals with the proper lubricants.

I had this same problem with our 05' Blazer...Stupid key lock...It's the stupid little sensor inside the actual key! We had GM replace the whole locking mechanism and key (under warranty) and they sent us the bill, it was close to $300 but warranty covered it all including the Tow!! But it also can be just a fragment of Dirt in the tumblers, GM is Notorious for this, hence why we sold the truck shortly after and went import :S(better gas mileage, but NO space)

yea so i took it to the dealership he wants 550$ for a whole new shifter cause apparently you cannot just replace a solenoid so nearly 900$ from GM to fix this. 500 for the part and 300-400 for labour think i should sell the car and buy a quality bmw or audi or something.

... I found the key release button now, picked my car up from the dealer ship so i can atleast drive it untill i figure something but I noticed since the dealership got my key out it doesn't seem to be sticking anymore well atleast it hasn't stuck yet, and i'v been driving steady on and off all night which is strange cause it usually sticks all of the time and it hasn't even stuck or anything wierd yet but we'll see tomorrow morning when i get off work. I'm going to try and go talk to the dealership and see why they have to replace the whole shifter when its clearly a problem with the solenoid in the shifter, or ignition. As i'v googled around i also find you can indeed just buy the solenoid from a gmpartsdealer for roughly 35-50$ anybody have any other information on this.
