ChizzerZ24 02-12-2005 08:04 AM

is it just a loop whole in the law that some what protects us? How is it Canadians are safer when ti comes to downloading music/movies? You always see as well servers that want to move to Sweden because of there laws as well?? What laws does Sweden have that "piracy" sites always want to move there stuff there?

We are safe for the time being because how many people have to heard of in Canada getting sued? They are only going after people in the US and certain countries in Europe right now. I am sure if a cop came to your house on another matter and found out what was going on they would charge you but the RIAA isn't going after people in Canada yet.

Iran has the best laws if you want to pirate stuff because there is no copyright law there.

ChizzerZ24 02-13-2005 01:10 PM

^^^Ahh I see... What's really stopping them from going after people in Canada though? It just sounds like a matter if they want to or not, not so much there's a law so really anyone can still be taken down eseentially regardless of Country??

Cereal 02-13-2005 02:13 PM

Well, I guess they don't think it's big enough to start going after people in Canada yet. I really don't know. If they wanted to, yes they could start coming after us tomorrow if they wanted.

I think they can only go after people if their country has a copyright law. If they don't I don't think they can go after them.

It's just that the US and Europe, well it's much bigger then it is in Canada.

american companies cant get personal information from canadian internet service providers due to privacy laws

Yeah I saw this advertisement in a magazine tonight almost posted it on my wall lol

It's easier to hide when your amongst the leechers, but when your a host its a lot harder to stay hidden.

Thing I wanna know though, is how they can catch you if your simply just downloading? There's gotta be over a million people downloading these things, they won't catch everyone.

Cereal 02-14-2005 02:06 AM

They can't watch everybody but they will try. a better way of p2p has to come out. Maybe a P2P client that all the transactions are encrypted with like 256 bit encryption.

Still doesn't answer my question as to how they actually catch people... I think the only one who can answer that may be them themselves however...

Every way they come out with, there will always be a way to crack it.

They pull all Ip's from that server and can link them to the country/province/state/cities.. then they can get in contact with that IP and see who on that had this IP address at a certain time and there ya go.. You have ur "pirater"

Wouldn't that be illegal and an invasion of one's privacy?? I'd like to see where exactly this would fit in with privacy law...

It's just a loophole...We pay a tariff (tax) on cd's in Canada, the US doesn't...effectively that allows to share the song with another person...So when you p2p a file, they can't tell how many people you shared it with...So until they change that, we are fairly safe, also the US would have to jump through a hell of a lot hoops to get personal info from Canadian ISP's...

I heard it had something to do with privacy laws and copyright. Photocopiers in a public library, copyrighted content etc... It's been to court in Canada twice already and the second used the precadent of the first. This is all hearsay and I do not know the truth.
